Why spend money and be controversial - who can complain about a natural setting that is allowed to stay forever - people can view the area from afar. Why do we have to spend $58million in tax money on a 'thing' to remember.

Good question. We have a trillion dollar deficit, how does spending 58 million dollars that we don't have honor anyone? If my husband dies and I borrowed 1 million dollars to put up a giant headstone, it would be a dis service to him as I would not be able to provide as well financially for his children.
Wouldn't those familes of flight #93 be better served by college educations for their orphaned children?

While I agree a memorial of some type would be nice NO ONE should profit from it. I bet a nice nature path to "donated" stone where people can sit, maybe post thoughts would be just as nice as a land owner who can't use his land anymore because its sacrileges for too many people. It's not his fault the plane crashed on his land or his descendants fault but should they loose the land come on American there has to be a tasteful compromise.

USA is way out of control with our dollars as it is.

Can a local sales tax .0000% pay for it No then it just hurts the locals huhhh... Well I can't find a way to say anything that isnt' hurtful to anyone who lost someone on 9/11 so I just will stop with that.

When I read of a $58 million pricetag for the Flight 93 Memorial---and the land owner, Mike Svonavec, goes alert like one awakening from years in a coma--demanding millions of $$$$......I have to shake my head in disgust and shame.

How banal and sick is it when we face the real spectre of corruptive business politics involving a memorial borne out of tragedy and heart ache. I know for a fact that the Flight 93 crash site CAN be made into a solemn and tastefully well built site--WELL BELOW that purported $58 million pricetag.

One better, I think true Americans should tell the greedy and tacky Mr. Svonavec to f-ck himself and opt to leave the entire site natural, just the way it is.

That's nothing. The 9/11 WTC survivors want a $500 million memorial paid for by the government. That's almost $2 million per victim.

Vets don't make demands like this for memorials to our war dead.

What is wrong with a nice block of marble with a plaque on it? Why do memorials need to be so expensive and elaborate?

I would just put up a nice plaque or stone wall with the names of the passengers and crew who died and put the names of the terrorists on the bottom of the urinals in the restroom.

There was nothing there to memorialize. The plane was scattered over 8 miles after the government brought it down. Give the money to the familys like jewlgrl suggested.

Why can't we spend the money for a memorial? What's wrong with a memorial? Are you that callus?

Because CRONIES need to make money to fund future campaigns.

It is called kickbacks. I get U elected and U send me grossly over inflated GOVT projects my way. And who in their right mind would protest a 911 memorial. :)

Because it allows peoples families a place to say, "see, your daddy (mommy) died right here at the hands of so and so." They just want to be remembered.
