About 45 miles from LAX to Irvine. Depending on traffic, drive time is 45 minutes to almost 2 hours.
To get to Irvine, you've got a couple options. There are the airport shuttle vans that drop you at your exact destination, which run about $50 from LAX to anywhere in Orange County. There are also busses that run between LAX and several destinations in Orange County, including Disneyland, and John Wayne airport in Irvine. Last time I checked on the bus, it was about $25, and I think they run hourly.
If you've got a lot of time to kill, or just want to venture into what passes for mass transit in Southern California, an interesting adventure is to take the L.A. light rail system to Union Station in downtown L.A., and then Amtrak to Orange Count. Catch a shuttle to the Green Line light rail station, about 5 minutes from LAX, take the Green Line to the Blue Line, which puts you at Union Station, and then catch an Amtrak train to Orange County. In OC, there are stations at Anaheim Stadium, Santa Ana, and the south end of Irvine. Cost would be about $15, and take 2-3 hours, depending on how long you had to wait between trains. This is actually kind of cool duing the daytime, because you'll see parts of LA and OC that are only visible from the trains.

Just fly straight into John Wayne Airport in Newport if you can, less than 5 miles from Irvine. 50 miles from LAX to Irvine can seem like a whole day if your flight arrives between 5:00 am and 7:00 PM. Save the hassle and go direct... If possible.
From LAX to Irvine:
City bus... no. Greyhound bus... yes.

Irvine is not that far from LAX (about 45 miles) but depending on traffic, it can take you forever!
If you can do it, fly into SNA (John Wayne) instead or even into LGB (Long Beach)
If you MUST fly into LAX, take the Super Shuttle to Irvine. You don't even need a reservation. For more information, see the website below.

Instead of flying into Los Angeles, consider flying into the John Wayne Airport which puts you right into Irvine. See

It is 43 miles from Irvine, California to LAX. I am not sure your bus service would take you that far. You could drive for about 50 minutes to get there.

I work at LAX. You can take Super Shuttle or Primetime Shuttle from LAX to Irvine They are located under the overhead Orange sign that says Shared Ride Vans. And there are dispatchers right there.
