They're not towels. The only time you'll see an Iraqi in a towel is when he comes out of the shower or bath!

People in Iraq cover their heads because it's hot. It is not related to religion, it's related to culture, the sun, and the desert.

Are you talking about turbans? THEY ARE NOT TOWELS--it's partly cultural, like baseball caps.

In Morocco sometimes you see ppl walk outside with an acutal towel on their head but they are coming from the hammam (sauna, turkish bath) and they don't want to 'catch cold' or have the water drip everywhere.

Do they have the same hammam's in Iraq?

EDIT: and yes JP above me is correct---i forgot about them...it does protect from the sand--u ARE in the desert ya know!

They are not towels or turbans, they are called Shemagh or kaffiya.

It is really sunny and dusty, keeps the sun and dust off your face. I used to keep one around my face when riding the gun when I was in the army there

----------------------------------------
For FEZ: No, as far as I have seen. I think they are a more Roman inspired thing, as are really often in areas that were under roman influance for a long time, like north africa and turkey.

----------------------------------------
They work really well, I still have mine, and used it when I was hiking in Arizona..You do not want to be in a dust storm with out one. The protection from the sun is another big thing, that is why arab dress covers the whole body (as opposed to people in hot, yet tropical climates).

You will see them often in 2 colors (red or black). I've been told that the red represents the Arabian kingdom and the Black (I am only going on what I was told) represents arab unity

but I could be wrong on this one

No one from Iraq wears turbans (or towels as you know them) on their heads, you're confusing them with southern and central Asian countries like the 'stans and India.

It's actually the Sheiks that wear turbans. Get your religions right. Iraq has mostly Sunnis and Shiites, not Sheiks.

Because all Prophets including Jesus wore towels on their heads.

Muslims are given the responsibility to carry on the work of the Prophets.

Why do we show our legs in public by wearing shorts & skirts? It's called cultural differences, kiddo. Read up-you might actually learn something.

They aren't towels. They are little sheets. The correct term for the people who wear them is "Little Sheet Heads".
