It's called preparedness for emergencies, and when you think about it, that's not such a bad idea. If every family was so well-stocked it would make things easier all around in the event of a natural disaster, loss of a job, medical emergencies, etc.

I didn't know, so I did a search. I came up with a site about the food preparation stuff for mormons and the guy that did it gave this verse at the top of his home page:

"If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1Tim 5:8 (NIV)"

Why not? Honestly, it will never hurt anyone. Also, knowing how nice and helpful Mormons are, it's nice to know in case of a disaster.

If a pandemic like the bird flu hit ... we'd all wish we had a year's supply of food.

Mormons store up a supply of food because of their doctrine on "Storehouse." The doctrine basicly implies that any eccess that we have is to be given to the storehouse. The storehouse is headed by the Bishop. You can find the laws governing the storehouse concept in the book of Doctrine and Covenants.

Let me elaborate on this subject for just a minute. The concept of the storehouse is actually another form of communism. bleieve it or not. In fact, mormonism in and of itself is communism. and just like communism, it can never gain enough power. The idea of zion, a place where everyone is governed by a prophet and everyone is to give to the storehouse so that it can be given back to them.

We in america tried this and it failed messerably. I believe it was Jamestown. Look it up.

Because they dont have a real Prophet to tell them when a real emergency is going to happen. Instead they say just be prepared all the time. Wouldnt it be nice if there were a real prophet who could warn us about things like 9-11 or Tsunamis or any other bad thing that would soon happen? I think then the church might have some real credibility . The one they got now denies his own churches doctrine on national TV . On 60 minutes, Mike wallace asked about the LDS teaching on Eternal Progression (Man Becoming God) and Gordon Hinkley said "I dont know that we teach that".
