New policies were just announced this week which allow you to bring proof of ID (a birth certificate) and print off of the internet a copy of the information that you have applied for a passport or bring other documentation that it has been applied for.

Check the Passport office web site for this latest information:

In the past you could pay an extra fee and get a passport expedited, but I don't know if the policy has changed since the 9 / 11 events. I'm sure there is some information on the Department of State website.

Not unless you can get through on the phone and make an appointment at the nearest Federal Building. Sorry but otherwise you need to make some contingency plans.

Paying the fee for an expedited passport still take 3 weeks to get it, and even if you had the time you can't do that now since you have already turned in your application.

I actually saw a report on the news about this a few days ago. They said the passports are taking extra long b/c in 2008 Americans will need to have a passport to visit Mexico, Canada & the Carribean, unless its Puerto Rico or the US virgin islands or Guam b/c they are US territories. Anyway on the news they said if you absolutely need one, you need to go down to the office & wait a few hours in line & you will leave w/ the passport. GOODLK!

you can see if its possible to get it expedited. though i think you have to do that when you first send off for it. i know they offer next day return service for emergencies only. id have to be a legitimate emergency (not just you'd miss you trip) and you'd have to prove it. i got my passport today and thats what the post office told me.
