we have a lab/retriever shes six months old - a chap at work said she should of come into heat by now?? and I'll have dogs from the neighbourhood barking at the door.. I would like her to have a litter when shes older, as I have the money and time to look after them, but have no idea if it'll be worth the bother?

I've worked with animals all my life although never breed dogs (plenty of other animals)- I'm confident this would be within my boundarys - and can guarentee I would be as protective as if they were my own pups as to the home they went to

Why exactly do you want her to have a litter? Talk to a local breeder - lab would be best. I found this page and read it - I really liked it.

Wait 'til she's about 2 to breed her, if you decide to.

Make sure you really want to breed. I found a couple of virtual breeding websites very handy, and they aren't the same old arguments recycled, either.

They were actually kind of fun and interactive.

You should really have her spayed. She'll go in to heat really soon. Usually they go into heat at around 6 months but they can get their first heat cycle as late as 8-9 months. Getting her spayed would be so much healthier for the dog and you won't have to worry about the dogs coming up to the door and an unexptected pregnancy when you can't afford it. There really isn't much that the dog gets out of having a litter of pups. If you did let her breed it would be more for your own enjoyment then it would be for her. Do whats best for your dog. Just get her spayed.

First dogs can come into heat anytime after 5 months. Teh average is 6 months but not always.
With a lab or retriever tehy are not full grown until 2 years old.
They are known for hip dispasia. you should have her tested for this as well as make sure the male is. she shouldn't be bred until she is or her haeat after she is 2 and has been testeed.
You also need to check into the laws in the area you are in where I live there are state laws on vacinating, Teh kind of health guarantee.
Teh pups should be vaccinated and wormed before tehy go now ralize she can have about 10 or more pups with the breed she is so figure in vet bills for all that.Plwase talk with your vet as well as any health problems they may cary and his suggestions.
Good Luck

Dogs can come in heat at any time between 5 and 8 months old. Generally it's at 6 months of age but as with humans, it varies a lot.

Spay her. Do NOT let your mutt have a litter. There are millions of dogs in shelters at the moment waiting to be euthanized and it's not hard to believe that most of them are mutts that people like you have created. She isn't purebred, she isn't AKC registered, she isn't a Champion, she doesn't have Champion bloodlines and she hasn't been tested for hereditary health problems. Forget breeding and leave it up to the people who are responsible and smart enough to do so. She doesn't need or want to have a litter. She needs to be spayed.

For a boxer it should be about 8 months old, sometimes the first time is not very noticeable, and some dogs can go over 12 months and still be quite normal.

Usually 6-9 months is when their first cycle starts. You definitely don't want to breed her on her first couple of cycles.
Also, unless you have a huge time commitment, breeding most likely isn't the best thing for your pup, it's not as easy to find them homes as you would think, and the risk of pregnancy complications could end up being a financial nightmare. :)

She will be in heat about 6 to 8 months old. It isn't worth the bother if you are not a breeder. Have your dog spayed ASAP to prevent this from happening. Please, if you do not know what you are doing, don't bother.

Please do not breed your dog! The shelters are full of homeless dogs that need homes, and while I can understand that you might think that it's fun to breed your dog, she will be much happier and healthier if you spay her. It is also a very bad idea to breed in a first heat - please, do not do this.
