Under God's direction, Moses' army defeats the Midianites. They kill all the adult males, but take the women and children captive as sex slaves. When Moses learns that they left some alive, he angrily says: "Have you saved all the women alive? Kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the female children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." So they went back and did as Moses instructed, killing everyone except for the virgins. In this way they got 32,000 VIRGINS . ----(Numbers 31:1-54)
If you see a pretty woman among the captives and would like her for a wife, then just bring her home and "go in unto her." Later, if you decide you don't like her, you can "let her go." But don’t sell her on the open market. ---- (Deut 21:11-14)
The Tannaïtic Midrash Sifre to Numbers in §157 comments on the above quoted commandment of MOSES to kill the Midianite women as well as the male children...."
"....According to the Tannaïte Rabbis, MOSES therefore had ordered the Israelites to kill all women older than three years and a day, because they were [virgins and] "suitable for having sexual relations." [138]...."
"Said Rabbi Joseph, "Come and take note: A girl three years and one day old is betrothed by intercourse....."
Intercourse with 3 year old children was made legal for the Jews.

Blessings, I know this sounds to our civilized ears, but it is important to know a few things so as not to be upset by this scripture. First, the Midianites were a evil and wicked people in the eyes of our HOLY Father God. He considered them to be an abomination, so the killing of even their children (who would grow up and continue the abominations) was necessary. As for the women, they were the ones that the Bible says brought the men into the abominable practices (mainly sun worship) - Christians today might want to be very afraid of celebrating Xmas and Easter which are a form of the detestable sun worshipping system or they too might meet with the same fate as the other participants did. The having sex with 3 yr olds may not be what our terms of sex is today. I believe the men could take their finger and put it in the 3 yr old's vagina marking her as his wife ( I doubt that these men were having sexual intercourse with 3 yr olds) Fathers readily accepted this practice, because women were pretty much thought of as vessels for babies to come through they didn't carry the same esteem that a son did. And if a father could get a good dowery or bring together two feuding families or make a profitable union along the way all the better. And as for the Israelite men choosing a woman from the captives and discarding her if he didn't like her after having sex with her, is more likely that these captive women wanted the men to build shrines to their sun gods and worship them, and this was a horrific sin marked by death to the Israelites. So they were allowed to put them out of their house, but couldn't sell them to other nations. And although we today would consider 3 a very young age, things were different back then, statistically women didn't live very long (child bearing was the #1 killer) and their fathers chose the husband for the daughter - sometimes even before she was born. But even with these scripture the Israelites weren't allowed to do wicked in the eyes of God any more than we Christians are to do now. But regardless of your own opinions, pray not to question God's Word and to be accepting of His will as Holy and faultless. There is nothing that He commands that is ever wrong and even though it may not sit right with us mere humans . . . It is right by the Holy Creator, God Almighty. PS: to all that find these scriptures offensive, here's a question for you, what do you think God is going to do in the day of Judgment to ALL that disobey HIM? Hell is not a eternal picnic you know!
Bless You

Because God is a just Judge. The Midianites had tempted the Israelites to idolatry and against God, corrupting the Israelites. "The abominable nature of the influence which the Midianites had upon Israel in leading them into idolatry merited the destructive judgment of God. The moral justification for this action is found in the fact that God has the right to give and take life. Since the wages of sin is death, and the Midianites engaged in a terrible sin, they justly reaped the consequences of God’s vengeance" against sin. There was no "reforming" of the Midianites.

This is a good example of why no one should take the Bible literally. If you believe the Bible is the word of God then you have to believe that God really commanded Moses to do this. Stop and think.

Yes these issues can be addressed and answered.
Misinterpretation of scripture is common place these days, and it takes wisdom to interpret the scriptures in question.
There are reasons behind many things that we humans cannot begin to fathom, and in this particular instance it holds true.
Good luck in finding the answer.

Any God that would sanction this type of barbaric behavior is not worthy of worship or love. The Old Testament is just another example of how flawed and evil man is, and the extent that he goes to justify his behavior.

Judaism is a very strange and disturbing religion. I've always deplored the OT and wish it could be excised from the Christian Bible.
