Does anyone know how sick is normal? He is moving around very slowly and is VERY sensitive on his shoulder where he got the shot. When should I take him back into the vet?

It is not uncommon for puppies to have reactions to the vaccines - especially smaller breeds such as a Westie. The vaccine is either a killed or modified version of the actual virus - it is designed to stimulate an immune response in the puppy so they can develop antibodies to the virus. Walking around slowly is not a normal reaction to a vaccine, but it doesn't necessarily mean the puppy is having a reaction - just that you will need to take care when having him vaccinated. Of course the puppy could actually be sick - there is no way to tell for sure without a physical exam so if you do decide to, take him to your vet to be evaluated.

There are two different reactions to vaccinations in dogs. One is a normal reaction (called side effects) and the other is a allergic reaction. Side effects may start within several hours of the vaccinations and last for several days. Side effect can include: discomfort at the vaccination site, mild fever, irritability, decreased appetite and activity, occasional sneezing after an intranasal has been administered, and a small, non painful swelling under the skin at the vaccination site. This might take several weeks to disappears. Now if your dog is having an allergic reaction, this is serious and needs immediate medical intervention. These are some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction to a vaccination, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, coughing, swelling in the face and head, severe sneezing, hives, extreme lethargy. Since I'm not observing the dog you have to decide what catagory the symptoms your dog is displaying falls into.

Have you changed his food? Have you changed what time you are feeding him? Did you get a new job where you are home less than before or at a different time? Any of these things could have mixed up your dogs schedule. Start by trying to answer these questions. Then adjust your dog's walking times. Try feeding him a couple of hours earlier and walking a little later. Be sure to crate him and be sure to take him out first thing in the AM.

If you are concerned then give your vet a call it is better to be safe then sorry.
It is normal for them to be sensitive in that area. Think about when we get shots. Our arms hurt and we can't move them very well. It is very tender for several days.
Just to be on the safe side give the vet a call though.

Lots of puppies are kinda lethargic or sleepy the day of their shot. If his face is puffy and swollen, get him to the vet IMMEDIATELY!!! If he's not feeling well, give him a day and see how he does. If he starts vomiting, get him to the vet. His shoulders may be sore b/c that's usually where they get the shot. And in a few days to a week, you may notice a bump in that area, that's normal from the vaccine.

Please do some research on vaccines and consider not getting him another. People will tell you Oh this is normal and no big deal, but I assure you it IS a big deal and just because many dogs have reactions does not make it right or acceptable. There is a LOT of reading for you to do. It's best to learn and make informed decisions. You can not rely on your vet to do what is best for your dog. At 3 months of age I will say he never needs another vaccine again in his life. Read the info.

Call the vet and ask what is normal behavior after getting his shots. They will know what they gave him and what to do better than any of us because 1. we don't know your dog and 2. we don't know what the vet gave him Be on the safe side and talk to the vet

Yes, call the vet, describe what the pup is doing. He must be having some kind of reaction to the vaccine.

Some pups will react like this to their shots. Just watch him and if he starts to vomit or shake then call your vet right away OK. But for now it's pretty normal for the pups to just want to sleep.
