I have three babies in heaven, but not because I sent them there. They died quite without my permission.
The reason it is unethical is because it is not my place to decide when someone dies. Life and death are clearly not under my control.
I can understand why the death penalty was used in the OT - they were predominantly nomadic, after all. It's not like they had rehab or prisons. I believe there is a fundamental difference between the OT and NT in that in the OT the laws were civil as well as spiritual. It applied to a nation, not just individuals.
I don't support the death penalty. I think our criminal justice system (USA) leaves much to be desired. There needs to be a much stronger emphasis on genuine rehabilitation earlier in the criminal career - and better career choices available to people at risk.
I think we should invest much more in being proactive and preventing criminal behavior by investing more in our children.
