any tips on how to keep the newspaper lit in a charcoal starter?

you can add a little vegetable oil to the paper... about 1 to 2 tablespoon, to wet a portion of the paper. This will prolong the burn time of newspaper since the oil has to burn off before the paper can burn completely.

Twist it, like a rope. Make it tight, it will stay lit longer.
