Gluttony, adultery, homosexuality, alcohol, fornication...all can have serious ramifications in terms of individual health.
Lying, stealing, cheating, murder...all have serious ramifications for society.

People in Biblical times weren't complete dolts. Didn't they also know some of the health effects and effects upon society of these actions? Weren't these, in effect, laws created by man for the betterment of mankind?

Biblical sins often are for the better of society and personal health. That doesn't invalidate God or the Bible being his Word to us. In fact it is one evidence for it. There are restrictions in the Old Testament written many thousands of years ago that better health. For example the way disease or dead bodies were to be handled. This medical information didn't exist at this time but God in his almighty wisdom gave this information to man.

I think you are looking at the issue from the wrong end of the equation. While it is true what you said about sins it is God who says what is a sin and what is not. Since our loving creator cares about us He gives us rules for our good. It's not like someone found out that these rules were good and then created a religion so that they could pretend to have some divine authority to give them backing.

The Bible identifies "sin" as breaking God's laws or commandments. How wonderful to see today that many of His commandments actually have a physically healthful aspect to them. God 's commandments are for our good and result in orderly living. However, we must remember that sinning is going against God personally, not just against your body.
