There's this woman at my job who was hired by one of the corporate bigwigs to sell in my market and others. She works out of my department but reports to the bigwig, not me. She hasn't sold squat in my market yet, but supposedly is this great salesperson. She and I don't get along. She's always sending me these emails (cc'ing her boss and mine) about things that aren't right in my department, support she's not getting, etc. I think she's a total snake who just wants to make me look bad. I manage ten other people of various backgrounds, personalities, ages, etc. and manage to get along with all of them. I've tried to get along with her but it seems all she wants to do with me is to embarrass me or put me down. I know she feels she's untouchable because she's the big boss' old friend and former co-worker. I now keep contact with her to a business-only bare minimum and even made some friendly gestures but all I get in return is more of her crap. Thoughts?

Here's the strategic way to deal with this situation. Ignore all the other crap from her. As she hasn't sold anything in your market (if she is supposed to), I'd attack that like a shark going after fresh liver. Every week, make sure that her boss knows that you've been depending on her to perform and she ain't doing anything. Don't mention or deal with any of the personal or social issues, just send a casual email or note to him with a gentle reminder that you're all waiting for her to deliver and she ain't. Unless they're screwing in the hallway (in which case you're screwed too), her performance is what will do her in. All the other stuff will look like what it is -- diversions from her inability to deliver on her own work.

Just be sure never to mention any of her other failings, or criticisms or complain about anything other than the measureable sales performance, that's 'you've all been counting on'. Her days will be numbered if you stick to business.

If she get's some traction and you get called in about her complaints.... don't respond to the criticism in any way..... your defense is just : "of course she's complaining about me, and everybody else...... she can't do her job, we're all waiting for the sales to materilize and she knows it. "

Don't let her get to you. Whatever she does, continue to be the professional that you are and document, document, document.
My experience with people like her is that you are probably not the only one that has had enough of her. If enough other people complain, to their higher ups it will get back to the big boss. And if she is already making a bunch of waves, maybe she won't be around long. Hang in there.

Sounds like she wants your job. Try out sourcing her to other managers. If enough people get a taste of what she is about, the word will rise to the top.

This is a tough situation but hang in there. Maybe you need to talk to her about your communication problems and suggest ways that you could compromise. Perhaps she isn't used to your methods so a simple explanation/thorough conversation could go far. If all else fails, try talking to your supervisor about your problem. Maybe he/she can a suggest a way to better your relationship with this employee. Good luck! :>)

I agree with everyone. Make sure to keep copies of all the work you have done for proof if asked later on. Keep doing everything that you are supposed to do so that they don't have anything on you. Besides that just try to ignore her and feel flattered that she is really that jealous of your good work.

Just keep your nose to yourself and shut up and stop whining. From personal experience you cannot do anything about those type of people except deal with it if you want to keep your job or quit. Maybe you will get lucky and she will eventually leave but sooner or later someone just like her will take her place.
