I would check out the xterra owners club forum they have a section dedicated to appearance and lots of people with experience.
As for me, I am not a big fan of rims on an Xterra especially if its a 4wd and you do any sort of offroading.
Assuming that your still set on rims I wouldn't go much bigger than 18's on the X. As far as rims go I really like the 5 spoke black look. There are lots of options depending on your price range

Picture your truck color and all on tirerack.com web site And see various rims and tire combos. some 20's rub while turning stick to 17's or 18's and 295 width is about all you can do

Assuming that you want wheels with street tires, I would say to not go above 20," since anything above that comes off looking too big for the car, and I'm guessing you don't want the "donk" look for your SUV.

20 and up go with the biggest you can get the bigger the better but also the bigger you go and if you have a low profile tire you will feel the car bumpy so make sure you get tires with some meat on them
