Traditional Martini = Gin and a little dry Vermouth, plus a green olive.

The current trend is to use vodka in a "martini" and different flavors... apple-tini, chocolate-tini, etc.

I personally think it's bogus to use vodka. It's like little kids wanting to play grown-up and sophisticated by making a drink that's easier to drink. It's like calling Martenelli's Sparkling Cider, apple champagne, which is totally bogus, but it makes people feel grown-up.

I guess you can tell what I think... lol.

There are different types of martinis. The first is made with gin usually just gin and a little vermouth. Also vodka martini made the same way just with vodka and vermouth. If someone wants a dry matini it would be made with mostly just the alcohol and a lemon twist as a garnish. Also now there are more involved martinis made with all sorts of interesting add ons. But these are the tradition old martinis.

You could also make a Vodka martini. Vodka and a tiny spot of dry Vermouth.

A "Dirty" Martini has olive juice in it. If you use a pickled onion as a garnish instead of an olive it is called a "Gibson." If you get rid of the Vermouth and add lime juice to the Vodka you have a "Gimlet" martini.
