Can people in the Navy call home from the ship?

If they can what kind of number will appear or will any at all.

There are "Sailorphones" onboard the ship that take AT&T phonecards and run about a dollar a minute or more depending on where in the world the ship is at when they are calling. I don't think a number appears on caller ID though unless they are using an actual ship phone that is run through the phone router and attached to the military ship-to-shore phone system; which the Sailorphones are not a part of.

RARELY, if at all. Ship to Shore phones are typically reserved for emergencies.

Unless your husband happnes to be the guy in charge of the ship to shore phones and their security. In which case, you get two over the course of a six month deployment that last about 2 minutes each, until the ship changes course and loses the sattelite. I didn't have Caller ID at that time, so I couldn't tell you what would show up.

It depends on the kind of ship they're on. Carriers do have phones, but submarines don't. That said, it is very expensive to make a call from a ship, even with an at&t ship to shore phone card its usually around a dollar a minute.

Yes they can, we had a bank of phones set up on board when I was in the Navy and you can call home, there is a slight delay in hearing the person on the other end and that person has a slight delay on there side but it is pretty good.
My mom hung up on me all the time, because like I said when you answer the phone there is a delay.

Definitely! Depending on whatever ops are being conducted at the time. They also frequently use email.

yes, they have satellite phones...kinda expensive. Use email instead.
