Karma means action, means "to do". Immediately we have an indication that the real meaning of karma is not fate because karma is action. It is dynamic. But it is more than simply action because it is not mechanical action. It is not unconscious or involuntary action. It is intentional, conscious, deliberate, willful action. How is it that this intentional, will action conditions or determines our situation? It is because every action must have a reaction, an effect. This truth has been expressed in regard to the physical universe by the great physicist Newton who formulated the law which states that every action must have an equal and opposite reaction.

The Buddha Himself answered the question. He has explained that so long as an unwholesome action does not bear its fruit of suffering, for so long a foolish person will consider that action good. But when that unwholesome action bears its fruit of suffering then he will realize that the action is unwholesome. Similarly, so long as a wholesome action does not bear its fruit of happiness, a good person may consider that action unwholesome. When it bears its fruit of happiness, then he will realize that the action is good. So one needs to judge wholesome and unwholesome action from the point of view of long-term effect. Very simply, wholesome actions result in eventual happiness for oneself and others, while unwholesome actions have the opposite result, they result in suffering for oneself and others.

The Aathman (the apparent Individual Soul) which is a pat of the Universal Soul (Brahmam) is not taking part in Karma-so it is not affected by Karma-only the superimposed (Adhyaasa)Prakruthi(material body) indulges in Karma and Aatman is only a mute witness. So Atharva Veda says (Karma) Kaamah Kartha-Na Aham Kartha-Kaamahka Rahitha-Na Aham ka Rahita-so sowing a seed and harvesting the product is done by the Prakruthi and not by the Aathman (Soul)-so there is nothing to worry about suffering.Even sri.Maharishi Ramana and sri.Paramahansa Ramakrishna when sufering from Cancer pain they did not show it out ,but performing their Karma.Maharisshi Ramana said that "my Prakruthi(Material body-both the mind and body) pay its price for its poorva(previous birth) Karma and it has no other alternative and my soul is in eternal bliss (Anantha Aanandham). He refused for Medical intervention.

Karma is the undeniable force that people get what they deserve, either in this life time or the next. It's the one thing that keeps me from beating the crap out of someone who pisses me off. Because I know that Karma will take care of it much easier and better than I can and I don't have to hurt myself physically in the process.

People want it to be something that supports reincarnation but it's just a simple concept that describes psychological conditioning. A realized zen master at a workshop I attended received a question about karma & pretty much said the same thing I did. It 'lasts lifetimes' because if we mess our kids up & they don't get help, they'll mess their kids up, etc. Our EGOS want karma to be something that tells us that we live forever, however.

Ridiculous.

Sorry but when I see children suffering from serious diseases I don't think - man they must be in a bad karma cycle. That is a pretty insulting concept.

i think karma is a good idea, do good and good comes back, do bad and bad comes back, seems more fair then doing bad for years and years, then just simply saying you're sorry and legitimately meaning it in order to get into heaven

Karma works as a feel good belief system for people who are too weak to seek their own revenge.
