The '87 GN was the quickest (not the fastest, there IS a difference) U.S. production car at the time. It was quicker than the '87 'Vette.
A stock GN will run 13.70 - 14.00 in the quarter mile at aobut 100 mph. My memory's a little cloudy on the top speed limitations of the stock chip but I believe it's around 129 mph (been a long time since I've seen a stock one!) The Regal body becomes a flying brick at that speed anyway.
Now, a modified GN is a different story altogether. There are many, many out there running in the 10s in full street trim (with A/C).
I've owned 3 GNs and currently am building a '36 Chevy street rod with GN drivetrain.
Addition- I hate to burst EldoradoDave's bubble (see below) but no stock GN, GNX or TTA (they're 1989 models not 1995 models, btw) ever ran the times he posted. Check the sites I listed, there have been many discussions about "quickest stock GN". Now, with as little $2500 in mods the LC2 motor is capable of putting the GN into the mid 12s. There are many GNs running in the 10s these days but it takes "cubic dollars" to get there and the stock block is really at it's limitations at about 600hp. There is a new aftermarket block available now which is great since the Stage II blocks have all been used up and require big money to build due to the parts being specific to that motor.

The Buick wins by a bunch...the '87 Grand National outran Corvettes back in the day, and I used to regularly toast Mustangs in a '64 Galaxie 500XL. Biggest problem for the Mustang is the poor rear axle setup that Ford never did fix. Traction problems and wheel hop galore. In fact, if you've got tape of that commercial from a couple of years ago for the current model Mustang doing donuts in a warehouse, look carefully at the rear axle. Wheel hop still comes standard, even after all these years.

I had a 1986 GN,the computer shuts off the engine at around 110mph.I did it once and scared the hell out of me,the front end was coming off the ground, steering wheel was all over the place. They are quick as hell, went through a set of tires in about 3 months, loved to burn them off. When you got on it,it would burn the tires each time the tranny shifted.I did race a older Vette in the quarter mile and beat it easily. It is one of the best cars I ever owned and regret the day I sold it.

11.87 in a 1/4 mi. And yes, this was the best kept secret GM had to offer at the time. This same set up was also installed in 1995 T/As and they were at the low 11,s in the 1/4 mi but discontinued because Pontiac didn't want a Buick powerplant in a Pontiac

they were very fast for the day they were built but a stock grand national won't beat a stock new corvette with 400 HP., your buddy's dreaming.

It was faster (1/4 mile) than the Vettes of its day. Its no match for the current ones though.

No matter how fast (or slow ) - faster that the suspension can safely handle.
