The cheapest way to hook up an iPod to your car stereo is through an FM transmitter, which allows you to play it through your existing car stereo on an empty FM channel. You can buy them anywhere (Target, Walmart, amazon.com, etc). Here's a review of a few of them: http://www.roadfly.com/magazine/14/ipod_fm_transmitter.1.html

If you want to play MP3 cds in your car, you'll need to get an aftermarket car stereo. I find http://crutchfield.com to be the best site to research car stereos, even if you don't buy there (although I recommend them for that as well -- they're not the cheapest, but they have the best customer service and instructions for do-it-yourselfers). You can find a fairly cheap (under $100) stereo that can play MP3s and also has an "aux-input" which can connect to an iPod or MP3 player using its headphone jack.

You can also buy car stereos with dedicated iPod controls (so that you can connect your iPod, stash it somewhere in the car, and still control it using the display and controls on the car stereo itself), but they are quite a bit more expensive.
