Lucifer started out as a beautiful, exalted, good angel; he had the highest position in Heaven under God Himself. He was a covering cherub. His position and beauty eventually went to his head, and he began to become vain and proud. He wanted God's job; he thought he could do a better job of running the Universe than God. So he started a mutiny in Heaven of 1/3 of the angels. He probably started out by persuading the others that he only had in mind the best for the Kingdom of Heaven, and managed to sway many of them. When it became outright rebellion, God kicked him out of Heaven along with those 1/3 of the angels down to the Earth. God had created humans in His image, and Lucifer (now Satan) was jealous of them. He attempted to turn them against God by tempting them to sin, which they did, and all the evil and disease that we experience in the world today is a direct result of that disobedience. Satan has been working hard for the last 6,000 years to destroy everything that God has created and represents. So yes, Satan did a lot to mess things up for us. Thankfully, God has a plan to destroy Satan and rebuild Eden so that those who are saved may be able to experience what Adam lost.

Satan decided that he should be higher than God.(Isaiah 14, 12 -14, How art thou fallen from heaven O lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds: I will be like the most High.) Which is God the Almighty Father. As the creator of all that can be seen and not seen, including satan himself. God cast him out of Heaven, with 1/3 of the angels who sided with him. If you want a one word answer REBELLION, against GOD, which will send many to join him in the place created for them.

Fell from Grace, because of arrogance and egotism.

Envious of man.......................

God reverberated into all the heavens that he was going to create man and give man a special gift that even the highest
of the angels would not contain. This gift is known to man as the human Soul. Hearing this Lucifer became filled with envy and arrogance, and said it was unfair since he was the first created, of Gods angels. He then took leave from heaven and
convinced a third of the angels to join him. Sometime later he was banished and chained.

There is more to the story but this should suffice.

Before the world was created, besides God, angels lived in heaven.
One of them - Lucifer - was so beautiful (not even angels were alike) that pretended to take God's place. (angel or thief?).
And God won that battle. He created hell, turned Lucifer to be Satan, the devil, and made him the ruler from evil. Quite a gift God prepared for us, humans, he will create afterwords.
After humans were created, Satan made Eve eat from the tree of wisdom. So we were punished because we learned. Then came the real tragedy. Adan and Eve had two sons. Cain and Abel. Cain killed Abel. So we come from a man who killed his brother and went to bed with his sisters, or perhaps, his mother (In no place it's said that Adan and Eve had daughters). After that, as we all can see, evil is defeating good, so God won one battle, but up to now, He is loosing the war.

In the beginning, when God created angels, he created Lucifer, who was the most beautiful angel of them all. But Lucifer thought that he could be better than God and he rebelled against Him, and so God took away his status as an angel of God, and sent him to become what is now Satan, the master deciever. Normally, people know that Satan is bad in general, but he really did rebel against God. Thats why he is what he is today.

Satan rebelled against the dominance of God.

Basically he was the first to say "hey, FU buddy, I'll do my own thing."

Funny that the greatest created being would rebel against it's master. Makes you wonder what's wrong with the master...and how we little humans can be wiser than that being.

He chose to rebel against God, "I will not serve", and then attempted to "set his throne against God's" and take God's place. This set up the following "War in Heaven" mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

The fall of man in the garden came later, after Satan (Lucifer) had been cast out of heaven.

His pride got the better of him and he began to think he could do better if he didn't live under God's rule. He wanted to be his own God. Which is the exact same thing he taught the human race to do. He said to Adam and Eve that they'd be as gods if they rebelled against him and that they didn't need him. There's a lot of people living in rebellion for that lie today.
