It is really equivalent to the justice, but contemplated from a subjective standpoint.
A righteous man is one who does that which is right, or just.
Righteousness is the resultant state of one who does that which is right or just.
The Bible teaches that none come into a position of righteousness in God's eyes as a result of keeping law, or any set of rules.
It teaches that all are law-breakers.
What God has done to enable one to come into a state of righteousness is to constitute His Son the Lord Jesus Christ as the representative of the whole human race. As such He has both perfectly fulfilled all the righteous requirements of law, and also has taken upon Himself all of the just punishment due for violation of law. This He did when He offered Himself to God as a sin sacrifice when He was crucified. Having thus born the just penalty for sin, God now reckons as righteous, or justified all those who put their trust in His substitutionary sacrifice. This is received as a free gift, by faith, and is the basis of eternal salvation.
This is true Christianity. It produces a changed nature, which delights in doing what is right.

Morally upright, without guilt or sin,and conformity to God's standard of right or wrong. There are several definitions but none dead-set to say this is what righteousness means. Seek a definition according to your way of life. It is amazing how this word is so mysterious. I will definitely do my research. Good Luck!

So there's a story in the bible about a mixed marriage. And god didn't like it, and they were told to break it up. And they didn't. So god sent a plague that killed like 25,000 people (just another fine example of god over-reacting). So then they broke up.
I asked a Mormon girl, why did god kill 25,000 people like that? She said "I don't know, maybe they weren't righteous." I just about fell out of my chair laughing! It was the craziest answer I had ever heard!
So, righteousness is the Christian excuse for god killing people.
