Get an infrared thermometer. Looks like a pistol grip laser pointer with an LCD display.

Just point and shoot at the surface.

I've seen one at Sears for less than $50 (US).

You can get an infrared thermometer at Harbor Freight Tools, online, for about $10. I have one and it works great! You point it at the object whose temperature you are measureing. One second later you have your reading.
