Hey hon. I had braces put on about a year ago. Basically you just sit down and he starts by applying some goop to little brackets which he glues to each of your teeth. It takes a while, maybe about 15 minutes. Then he bonds them by using a wand that he puts on the back of your teeth for about 5 seconds each. After that they'll slip in the wires, and then you'll get to choose what color of ties you want! (So much fun! lol) And then your pretty much finished! It doesnt hurt much the first few hours but as the time goes on, it gets worse. I'll by honest but the first night or the next morning its pretty brutal!! It really its pretty painful, I didnt take any tylenol but you definately can every few hours if you want. Also, eat lots of soft stuff like jello, ice cream, pudding, and shakes the first few days because its practically impossible to do. About a month later you'll have to go back and he'll put on heavier wires which will probabaly hurt some but not as much. Eventually it'll get to the point where getting them adjusted doesnt bother you at all. I hope this helped! And whatever you go through, just remember I know how you feel! Take care! :)

Well the brackets will feel weird when you first get your braces put on because your gums won't be used to having something rubbing against it. They might be scraping your gums a little, so be sure to use wax to put on them. (ask your orthodontist for some) Well... braces can be pretty painful when you first get them on, but they aren't bad after that. The only other time it hurts is when you get a new wire and maybe your first tightening or two. Hope this helps!

Well, when I first go braces there was a lot of tugging on my teeth and gums. But, usually there is not much pain while they are putting them on. Usually people over exaggerate when they say that getting braces put on hurts. What usually hurts more is when the braces are getting put off. That is a completely different story. The cement kinda hurts getting off, but the braces are worth it. I say DON'T be scared. It's not that bad.

Hate to say it, but yeah, it hurts. I mean, it's not excruciating pain or anything. It's just that your mouth will be sore for a while after they put them on. And then you're supposed to have the wire replaced and tightened every once in a while, so it's sore again then. But the process of actually having them put on is no big deal. They just kind of glue the attachments to your teeth and put the brackets in place, then add the wire. It's uncomfortable, but not painful. And if your dentist doesn't give it to you automatically, ask for dental wax. You'll want to put some over the brackets near your cheeks so the sometimes sharp edges don't cut up the inside of your cheek.

I hate to break it to you, but yes... A LOT! They have to completely dry out your mouth with cotton balls so you have no saliva. This is for the glue on your teeth that holds them in place. A completely dry mouth is actually more painful than it sounds.

You might feel perfectly fine for an hour or two after the procedure is complete but then the pain sets in. It will hurt for days. Even worse when you try to eat. You most likely will not be able to have much solid food except for bread and other soft things.

Don't worry too much about it though. After the first week you'll be back to normal and able to eat normal foods again.

skater_jammer was the most accurate. However, it really varies from person to person.

For myself, it didn't hurt at all (I had turned 12 just that month, so I was still young and easily pained!). The metal can rub your mouth painfully, depending on your teeth placement and how big your mouth is, but wax fixes that up easily enough.

Your teeth might be sensitive just from having something pressuring them for the first time, but they won't hurt like some people will try to make you think.

First day is the worst. I can even close my teeth and I have to eat tofu and drink milk all day. Plus, your first day experience will come back if the doctor tighten your braces but it will not hurt as bad as the first time.
