You are right there is some good evidence that exercise helps depression. Vigorous CV is probably the best. It is important to push your body so you sweat and perhaps even get a bit breathless. It is also important that you do sufficient duration to begin to tire you physically. Good examples would include jogging or perhaps a gym cross trainer at moderate reps.

The effect is probably due to endorphin release, which produces a natural high. This tends to get more marked as the weeks go by.

It REALLY helps! Exercise alone will lift your spirits and cause your body to release endorphins..which are natural and more healthy for you. You actually can get a natural high from exercise and it also keeps your mind off of whatever is depressing you.

I read somewhere that a brisk walk was best but according to the link, it seems that anything that gets the heart pumping is good treatment. It's important to exercise for at least
30 minutes a time.

There isnt one fixed.. The idea is for you to choose something you d like to do and have fun, distract, and the endorphins produced while you are exercising will make you happier.. So if you think about it theres lots of benefits.. Im not a great sportist but I love dancing, and when you do something exciting that you like, at least for a while, you forget your problems. Good luck

Anything you do will help. Exercise will release endorphins in your brain to make you feel better. Stay off prescription drugs for depression, if you need to take St. Johns Wort. They have proven it to be as effective as prozac with out the side effects. BE SAFE............ oh and walking is good, try dancing even by yourself or with Richard Simmons, or TyBo.

any sort of exercise, particularly aerobic, is good for depression. I dont mean actual aerobics, I mean exercise that gets your heart pumping

Its most beneficial to exercise outside in the fresh air, like walking or running in the park, rather than being inside or in a gym

Any sort of exercise will help, it releases endorphins and if your outdoors in the fresh air that helps too. I prefer walking and some light arm weights, then just getting outdoors to get fresh air and planting and gardening....that seems to help me out lots with my symptoms of depression.

Just start off with a brisk walk of around 20 minutes per day. You will start to feel good because the seritonin will kick in (your natural feel good hormone) - it won't be long before you won't want to miss your walk! I beat my anxiety and panic attacks by exercising - nothing major - just generally walking, a few weights around the house, a skipping rope etc! Good luck. x

Anything, the increase in blood flow creates Endorphines (same as chocolate and sex) so go for it! I once joined a karate class which I found just brilliant for getting rid of stress, but you could do whatever you want, what sports did you love as a kid? And do that one... plus getting all sporty makes you feel so sexy with that lovely toned body!
