Serbian anarchists plotted to assasinate him during a visit. To quote from a source:
"On June 28, 1914, at approximately 11:00 am, Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina, by Gavrilo Princip, a member of Young Bosnia and one of several (seven) assassins organized by The Black Hand (Crna Ruka). The event, known as the Assassination in Sarajevo, was the trigger of World War I. Franz and Sophie had previously been attacked when a bomb was thrown at their car. It missed them, but many civilians were injured. Franz Ferdinand and Sophie both insisted on going to see all those injured at the hospital. As a result of this, Princip saw them and shot Sophie, who died instantly. Franz Ferdinand was shot in the jugular and took a few minutes to die. The assassinations, along with the arms race, nationalism and the alliance system all contributed to the beginning of World War I, which began less than two months after Franz Ferdinand's death, with Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia."

Imperialism ( the colonization of alternative countrys, Africa in particular ) brought about extensive quantities of friction and tension between the powers in Europe. Incidents like the marrocan disaster', the fashoda disaster, the Kruger telegram, the Jameson raid, the boar warfare and it incredibly is warfare crimes, etc etc all brought about tensions between diffrent powers in Europe. Alliances have been a huge reason. Europe became into actually divided up into 2 camps. the triple alliance( Germany, Astro-Hungary, and Italy) and the Triple Entent ( Briton, France and Russia ) This meant whilst Astro-hungary had a relitivly minor conflict with Serbia. ( Arch Duke Ferdinand became into from AH and the murderer became right into a Serbian) and serbia became to it incredibly is Slav best chum Russia for help the two factors have been dragged into the conflict. and because such tension and hostility became into rife already, little could desire to be executed to dodge it.

if you are looking for some grand cause of WWI, i'm afraid you will find none.
i have read extensively and have never seen a motive listed for why the serbians who killed archduke franz ferdinand.
maybe it was ancient ethnic rivarlies, maybe their nations were at war, maybe they were paid - who knows.
all anyone can really know for sure is that it revealed a glaring flaw in the diplomacy of the time - that various nations would 'guarantee' the borders of another nation - if someone declared war on one all involved like this would automatically be at war.
and as a result when a couple of nations declared war on one another 60 nations found themselves at war.
22 million died in that bizarre conflict - many of whom ran off to join the military with a glee that to this day is not really understood.
they died defending a world that would die with them, for when WWI ended it marked the end of the period of time when europe would be ruled by kings, emperors and kaisers...

That's not fully established. The best answer I can give you is this: Serbian nationalists were pissed off that Austria was influencing its local politics and so they capped the duke in revenge.
