My husband and I have been there a few times now. We usually go for our anniversary and to get away from the kids for 5 days or so. We stay right on Bourbon St. We want to do the parting and the historical thing too.

There is so much to do, even within the French Quarter. Visit the Wax Museum on Conti St.,and also the historic homes in the Quarter, like Hermann Grima House and Beauregard-Keyes House. Probably the best place to party in the Quarter would be Pat O'Brien's and House of Blues. If you haven't done so, take the Katrina tour. There are also plantation tours and Garden District tours, and cemetery tours. A nighttime dinner jazz cruise on the Natchez or Creole Queen is a good outing, if you want a quieter place to go in the evening. Or take in a bird's eye view of the city from Club 360, located at the foot of Canal St. That would be something unique to do. For a place off the beaten path, take a cab to the Backstreet Cultural Museum and learn about the Mardi Gras Indians, a truly unique part of New Orleans' culture.
Visit the Cabildo or the Presbytere Museum in Jackson Square, and take a ride across the river on the fr*ee Canal St. ferry and catch the fr*ee shuttle to Mardi Gras World, to see where the floats are built. It's great place to visit and don't forget your camera!
If you like shopping for antiques, head for Magazine St. There are plenty of good antique stores there that are far cheaper than the expensive ones on Royal St. But one place on Royal St. I would recommend going to see is the M.S. Rau Antiques, in the 500 block of Royal St. They will be happy to give you a free tour of the place; you will be amazed at the variety and quality of items they have there, and the sheer size of their store.
Another good place to visit in the French Quarter is the Historic New Orleans collection, which has free admission. It's located in the 500 bloak of Royal St. also.
Swamp tours are good to take this time of year; the best one goes to the Honey Island Swamp in Slidell, about a 45 minute drive from New Orleans.

I'm straight outta New Orleans. Go to the French Quarter, Go to Cafe Du Moinde. Hit Jackson Square. Walk at night along the Riverwalk. Check out the George Rodriguz Gallery. Eat at the Redfish Grill on Bourban. Do some antique shopping down Royal St.

Shop at Urban Outfitters, eat at the House of Blues.

Riverwalk, French Market are always fun. try a swamp tour or plantation tour (i wouldn't really reccommend the walking ghost tours - they're not that intriguing). Check out Ms. Mae's on Magazine - a real locals dive, 24/hr dollar drinks :) Obviously Pat O's for some Hurricanes. Port of Call in the quarter has the best burger you'll ever eat in your life. Igor's uptown on St. Charles has the best bloody mary's in town. -just throwing some ideas around

WW2 museum is great, as is museum of art. I hear the Riverwalk is up and running also, but I have not been there since Katrina.

also look into out lying areas, like Kenner, Metarie, and the smaller towns where you can see plantations or get a swamp tour. Destrehan Plantation and Oak Alley are good plantations to visit, And O.A. was the site of some scenes in Interview w. the vampire.
