We went Dec 2005. The yellow cabs charged a flat rate of $45 dollars plus tolls. They are lined up as soon as you come out of the airport. Other options are cheaper, but you know its going to be safe with no hastle, so the extra amount is worth it.

You should be okay in a Yellow taxi. The fare is capped, and a $45 flat fee from JFK. If you were going to book transfers in advance a UK travel agent will probably charge about £10pp for coach transfers, and £50-60 for a private transfer, so a taxi will be your best bet.

The city regulates the fare charge, it's a flat rate of $35 dollars (might have gone up a little since) plus tolls and tip. This is to anywhere in the city from JFK.

Unless you are traveling late, late at nite or with a ton of luggage, the AirTrain, subway combo is faster and MUCH cheaper. Tale the AirTrain to Howard Beach Station & there pick up the "A" train to 42d Street Station only a block from Broadway. The cost is only $7.00 payable at the Airtrain entrance & you won't be alone; there'll be other airline passengers doing the same thing.

It's $45 plus tolls. Tolls are about $4.50, and tip should be about $5. Take the AirTrain. During rush hour it's faster, and it costs $7.

P.S. The bridges are not free. The tunnel is fastest.
