A raccoon comes to my backyard every night and has fought with one of my cats, and severely injured it. Pellet gun wont do the trick, so I'll use one of my .22's. But I have neighbors on both sides of me, so how can i make a home made silencer for a .22?

Get your cat checked for rabies. Racoons carry Rabies, and the odds are much higher when they are aggressive. I really hate it when my dog jumps one in the yard and I can't shoot it since I live in a subdivision. They really tear those ears up. Wakes up all the neighbors. The dog has always killed the coon, but I don't think the average everyday house cat can do that. My dog has had rabies shots, but I still worry about it.

A two litre plastic soda bottle stuck over the end will make it quiet. Hard to aim, though.

You could get some .22lr subsonic loads. How close can you get to him? If you can get real close, like within 5 feet it will barely make a pop, provided you hit him.

If the coon is fighting with your cats, though, I would consider this abnormal unless the cat jumped on him. I know I answered your question on how to silence the .22, but in this case I would call animal control and tell them the coon is attacking your animals. A coon with rabies is a public health hazard.

If arousing the suspicion of your neighbors is your concern, the gunshot is probably not what's going to do it. Coons are hard to kill. More than likely it will take several shots from a .22. In the meantime the coon will start to scream something fierce. This even if you put one straight in the brain and it goes straight into its death roll. I've killed a lot of coons, trust me on this.

Go to ebay and buy a 220 conibear body gripping trap. Make a bucket set and lure it with marshmellow and vanillia so as not to attract cats etc. This will kill the raccoon without a peep.

You're looking for trouble two ways here, and an unlicensed suppressor is by far the worse of the two. You must have BATF permission before you make a suppressor and penalties are stiff. And it sounds like you're trying to shoot in a residential area that has legal prohibitions, also bad.

If you can't shoot there legally, don't. If you can shoot there, do it without the suppressor. One shot, raccoon dead, probably doesn't even get noticed by the neighbors anyway.

Get some Aguila super colibri's they're quieter than an air gun. And they DO work. I've taken game with them. Go for a good, solid head shot, though. Also, don't leave cat/dog food out. That's what I use to bait them with.

As for Aaron saying his Border collie whipped a family of coons, he's full of it. We have one that go out and fights PACKS of coyotes on a regular basis, and coons generally have to be shot for him to win.

And, BTW, silencers are NOT illegal. All you have to do is fill out paperwork and send in $300.

You don't want to make a silencer - the ATF gets pretty pissed off about that and will haul you to jail for it. Instead, buy subsonic ammo. It is almost silent depending on what you shoot it out of. I shot some out of a bolt action Mossberg and the only thing i heard was the click of the firing pin.

If you really do want a silencer, you can buy one, wait a few months for the background check, and pay the $200 tax.

How do you silence a .22 LR? If you are in the USA you don't because it is illegal without going through a lot of red tape and money.

If you are within the city limits have animal control trap it. If you are somewhere where you can legal discharge a firearm at varmints use either subsonic .22 ammo or .22 Shorts.

Aquilla makes a 22lr round called Collribi might have spelled it wrong called sub sonics they make no noise only hear the trigger click and if the round hits something.Love them You can watch the round in a scope it is slow and arces pretty good only good for 50 feet though. The round has no powder fires by primer alone.

It is illegal to make a silencer. You can buy one from a Class III dealer. Having had the same problem, live traps work great and you don't have to worry about wounding them. You can shoot them through the cage if needed. Sub sonic .22 LR ammo works great as well as .22 shorts.

You don't want a silencer as they are illegal unless you pay the license fee to own one. Do one of two things. Buy some 22 long shells; they don't excede the speed of sound at the muzzle so you don't get the "crack"; you could also use 22 shorts, but I don't know if they will kill a racoon. If you want to use 22 long rifle shells use an empty plastic one gallon jug and tape it over the muzzle. It will muffle the first couple of shots, but you have to be fairly close as you can't aim very well.
