White gold is really in right now and no it is not cheap. Just make sure you get the rhodium plating on it so it doesn't start to turn yellow...need to have this done every so often. Platinum is overrated it has its maintenance too...it needs buffed out all the time to look smooth. Congrats on the engagement!

White gold isn't cheap, but it's actually a coating on top of gold. Once you wear it for awhile, the coating wears away and it just looks gold. You can get the coating reapplied, but it's about $20-30 each time. If you like the silver look and don't want to go through that hassle, look into platinum. Also, I was told that the setting (where the diamond is actually sitting) should be platinum or white gold, and not yellow gold, because the yellow gold will make the diamond look slightly yellow and less brilliant.

white gold + yellow gold = the same thing
White gold is just yellow gold that has been dipped into the chemical bath. Its popularity and the small expense of dipping is why white gold is usually a little more expensive. I remember back when I was younger it was cheap because rose gold was all the rage. Its all the same quality. I agree that it makes no real sense why people spend all that dough on platinum. It needs just as much upkeep as gold if not more.
Another option is stainless surgical steel. Its what they make body piercings out of and what my engagement ring is made out of. Everybody thinks it is platinum but with little upkeep and can't yellow or tarnish like gold and silver. My family member is a jewler so it's custom made but I'm sure you can get it done.

My engagement ring is white gold. I find that the quality is very nice and I do not think that it was ridiculously expensive (at least, I hope not). I'm unlike other brides-to-be in that I am less concerned with how much he spent on the ring and more interested in whether I like it and if I am comfortable wearing it. White gold is a good choice. Good luck!

Nah dude it's not cheap. If your thinking platinum is the best and white gold is cheap junk now....re-think! I bought a platinum ring for my fiance' from BB&B. It was nice and pretty blah blah blah...but the damn thing gets scratched up so easy. It's only been a couple months and if you were to put a brand new ring (the wedding band!) up beside it you can really tell the difference!! I'm no jewelry expert at all but I'm really not impressed w/ platinum. Gold is Good!!
Good luck with the proposal bud!!!!! -Early Congrats!!!

Cheap as in not expensive or tacky looking? I'm going with neither!
White gold costs in the same ballpark as yellow gold. I think it looks classy as well.
If your GF wears a lot of yellow gold jewelry in general, I wouldn't go with the white gold ring, but if she tends to wear more silver, go with it!

No, I don't think so. My daughters both prefer white gold or silver they do not like the yellow gold so I guess it's a personal preference. Good luck on the engagement.

NOOOO! White gold is not cheap, it actually cost the same as yellow gold. All my jewelry is white gold. I love it!!! We haven't had any problems. I agree about the rhodium though, every so often it needs to be repolished, but it cost nothing to do with my warrenty. Very beautiful and EASY to take care of!
Good luck

Not at all. White gold is usually just as expensive as yellow gold. In fact many women, including me, prefer white gold as it tends to make the gems look like they are sparkling more.

White gold is a tad more pricey on some pieces but just fyi, there is really no such thing as "white gold" there is only platinum gold that is white.
White gold is really gold covered in rhodium and must be reapplied every couple of years to maintain the white look.
