Do you need a marriage certificate or just the license to change these things?

You need to have the certified copy of the marriage certificate which is issued AFTER the wedding takes place. You are still single until you say "I do," and therefore have no legal grounds with which to change your name.

Once you have that, you first get your SS done, then your ID then your bank accounts, rental agreements, insurance policies, loans, credit cards, etc. It won't take long, but it needs to be done in that order (because you need ID in order to prove you are who you claim).

Change the Social Security first. You will need a certified copy of the marriage certificate, the embossed one, with the dated and notarized stamp.
Once you get the Social Security, they should give it to you the same day, or a statement saying you have changed it, and the card is in the mail.
You can then either wait for the card, and take it and your marriage certificate to your DMV, or call and ask for their requirements. The entire thing should take less than two weeks, and you can safely put your certified marriage certificate away for safekeeping.

The marriage certificate is just the "fancy" version of the marriage license - they're basically the same thing. So - either one works. The first thing you change is the name on your SS# because all other things revolve around that. Also remember to call and have your name changed on all your credit cards and stuff like that. I made the mistake of having my driver's license changed THEN my credit cards. I have "see id" written on all my cards so when I presented my license, it had a different last name on there. I found myself having to explain a number of times. No biggie - just a hassle.

You have to have your marriage certificate... and you have to change the name with SS first. Hope it helps.

In order for my employer, my bank, my college, etc, to change my last name they needed to see my social security card changed. So that's what I did first. I got married in June 2003 (Yes, our 4 yr anniversary is coming up this month) and I changed my last name on my social security card in April 2005. I changed my last name and address on my driver's license just 2 months ago. :-)

So Social first, then license.

you change ito n you ssn first. even though i took care of everything on the same day, i learned the hard way of going to the dmv first. big mistake since the last name didnt match my number.
ss office is your first stop.
i took my birth certificate, and marriage licence with me to both places since they asked for it.
