We had a lawn laid at Easter, it looked great until brown patches started appearing. We realised it is where the dog wees. Is there anything we can do to stop this happening? It has already been suggested that we get rid of the dog, which we won't do. Anyone know of anything we can give him? I know it is usually bitches that cause this, he was neutered at 6 months and maybe this has affected his hormones?

Put tomato ketchup in the dogs food, I know it sounds strange but it does work and doesn't harm the dog

There are products on the market that you can feed with the dogs food to lessen the effects of urine on the grass, I dont know how successful they are but i would rather try to tomtoto juice remedy as this does work and you are introducing less unnatural additives to your dogs diet using pure tomatoe juice then these so called 'herbal products' as they ahve a lot of chemicals in them and I would be wary of the long term affects on the dogs health. Another idea is right after the dog has peed pour about a litre of water over the patch (a jugs worth) to dilute the urnine. You can always just live with it, I don't know anyone with an immacualte lawn thats keeps a dog too (unless they keep the dog off the lawn)

You have asked the question I would love the answer to. I have tried everything and my lawn is covered in brown patches. Watering/diluting helps a bit. Tried weed & feed and not realising there was more weed than lawn ended up with big bare patches. Tried training in one spot, no good etc etc. Having read your answers going to try tomatoes/tom ketchup, hoping this will work for me. Good luck.

I have the same problem. I havent tried it yet but I have seen advertised fertilizer granules that will help fill in brown patches caused by animal urine. Check the lawn and garden section of a local store and start reading labels, thats what I plan on doing! Also, I have seen a supplement you can place in their food that will lessen the effect their urine has on grass. You should check a pet supply store for that.

After years of suffering from this problem with my old dog, when she passed away and I got a new one, right from the start, if she needed to 'go' before I was able to take her out for a proper walk, I would take her down the garden on her lead to a suitable place behind some bushes to pee - eventually she got used to that and now only pees in that spot, thus preserving the lawn! Maybe you could train your pet to do likewise?

Short of being on the scene and rinsing it with water there is not much you are able to do, they do make a substance that you mix with your dogs food that removes the acidity of the urine, check your local Petsmart or pet store I'm sure they carry the product. You should never use fertilizer or any lawn care substance on your lawn unless you know it is safe for your pet , most are not !!!

You can get these special stones which you just put in the dogs water bowl - this stops the brown patches from occuring. Sorry i can't remember what they're called but ask your vet, im sure they'll know!!!

And whoever said you should get rid of the dog is horrible.

I fertilize mine more than normal now that I have a dog. It seems to really keep it green and thick too. I use Scotts weed & feed and it also gets rid of weeds if you have any. I would focus on the yellow parts mainly and do it every w-end. That is what I have had to do. You can't of course stop your dog from unrinating but Scotts is the next best thing. Good Luck!

Give your dog garlic powder with his food. This will not stop him turning the lawn brown, but the smell of his breath will take your mind off it

You could try rinsing with water immediately after the dog has peed, or you could take him outside to pee on grass close to your home. Can't think of anything else. My little female dog does the same thing to my lawn, but I just accept it.

I'm having an artificial lawn, from same suppliers as Big brother garden, they do several 'types', No more mowing, no more watering, no brown patches (2dogs) no not growing in the shade, no withered up lawn in the summer! and you can hose it off!
