When writing a thank you for a gift (not money) it is proper to mention the gift. When thanking people for a monetary gift, it is proper to mention your plans for the money. For example:
Thank you for remembering me on my graduation day. I appreciate your generous gift. It will come in handy when it is time to buy books/dorm stuff/etc during my upcoming Freshman year at Blah U. blah blah blah

That's very encouraging that you have the good manners to not just take the easy way out by scribbling "Thank You" and that's it..so good for you! You can say how their gift (and you do not have to name specifically the $$ amount if it's cash) was much enjoyed and appreciated, and thank them for thinking of you. If you want to mention specifically that you bought something with cash (such as dorm room supplies, etc.) that's nice too. Just imagine being in their shoes, and what YOU would like to read in a Thank You note. As long as it is sincere (and NO TYPOS/MISSPELLINGS) you will do just fine. An excellent lifelong habit to acquire, as well. I give people one chance to write a thank you note, then I cut them off from further gifts; if they cannot bother, then neither can I!!

It doesn't have to be really long or anything.

Just write Dear__________. Thank you for coming to my graduation party (if they came) and for the ___________(gift of money, supplies to use at school, ect). It will be very helpful when i'm at __________(name of school).

Your Name.

Really simple answer -- just write:

Dear So-and-so,
Thank you for the (gift, money, etc.). I appreciate your thoughtfulness upon my graduation.

Sincerely,
Your name

Doesn't need to be long, etc. Just acknowledge what was given and say thanks.
