The image of The Devil is based on a hodge-podge of images associated with the dominant gods in religions that Christianity was attempting to replace...Pan of the Greeks, the Horned God of the Celts (both have horns, cloven hooves and a tail...) and possibly the sacred cows of India. The red skin was symbolic of the flushed complexion of passion, killing and raping are big no-no's after all... The tail of Satan was originally a snake, since many pagans held them as sacred messengers/assassins of the gods...The bat wings I think because bats are associated with darkness. The empires of the west wanted to make sure the people they conquered would properly understand (with torture and execution, if necessary,) the "fact" that these other gods were merely the many deceptive masks of Satan.
God is the ultimate father figure, the "Uber-Vader"... Grandaddy's always white haired, and in the old days old men liked to grow long beards as a sign of affluence, (if you're poor then its hard to keep it free of dirt and it loses the impact of the pure white beard.) White robes symbolize his purity and authority. One need only look at a portrait of Zeus to see the inspiration for the christian God's image...
What handsome horns you have...

Both Satan and God are spirits. So no exact accurate picture can be created of them.
God also does not approve of making an image to worship as a god, whether it's him or any other.
The image of Satan with red skin, hooves, pitchfork etc is a product of the minds of medieval artists who were influenced by representations of the mythological Greek god Pan and by the Inferno written by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri.
God created a perfect angel, who chose to become Satan which means Resister. But since this angel was created by God, he must be beautiful in appearance. Though his personality is evil.
Visions of God were given to his prophets. He is portrayed as Ancient, with white hair and white clothes. He is also described in colors.
These visions portray his awesome majesty, great dignity. Also serenity, order, beauty, and pleasentness.
Eze 1:26-28;Dan 7:9;Re 4:1-3;Ex 24:9-11.

I don't know about Xians but Christians get their conceptions from scriptural descriptions filtered through the work of various early artists.
