I know that global warming is happening, and I know that man is the main cause of it. I think 90% is man's fault, and 10% is "other". But what I want to know is what to say to people who correlate ice caps melting on Mars with what is happening on Earth. I think the connection is tenuous, at best.

The very scientists who have observed that one of the polar caps of Mars is melting have explained why this is: for Mars, it is spring. Over the next year, we will see ONE of Mars' caps melting, and the OTHER will be freezing and getting bigger. Just like the Earth, when it's spring in one hemisphere, it's autumn in the other. Follow the link for a source directly from NASA.

I would be surprised if this would be very convincing to anyone who brings Mars into the picture, however. After all, if they were willing to investigate their facts, they would already know that Mars is a total red herring.

Hope that helps, anyway!

The only reliable source of information about the climate of Mars is NASA and they have released reports relating to the warming on Mars and melting of the south polar ice cap. These very same reports state that any warming is localised, seasonal, inconclusive, not related to Earth and not caused by the sun.

As is the want of some skeptics, they conveniently omit to mention the parts of the reports that don't back up their arguments.

If you want the real facts all you need to do is read the original reports. This is a favourite of the skeptics because it has a dramatic headline - http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2003/07aug_southpole.htm

I make three points. The third is overkill.

Most of the other planets are not warming. So, it's not increased solar radiation.

The NASA scientists who did the work on Mars say it's not the same cause as the warming on Earth, and it's probably giant dust storms, long known to occur on Mars:

Scientists who study the sun reject the idea that global warming is caused by the sun:

http://solar-center.stanford.edu/sun-on-earth/FAQ2.html

The scientific data clearly shows the warming on Earth is mostly due to us, burning fossil fuels and making greenhouse gases.

As a result the vast majority of scientists agree that's the case, except for a few skeptics. The skeptics have no following in the scientific community simply because they have no good data to back up their claims. The data points to man made global warming.

That's a good question. What should you say to people that are more informed about the situation than you...

The best choice would be to ask them to help educate you.

The climate has been shifting for millions of years (which kind of makes your humans cause 90% claim kind of silly) and the major constant in that time has been the sun.

Likewise, Earth and Mars are experiencing the same climate change cycle. And again, the common denominator between the two is the sun.

This question speaks volumes about the global warming alarmists, this is how I interpreted the question:

I am convinced man is ruining the planet, I don't care to understand arguments against global warming however valid or invalid they may be I just want to make the skeptic go away.

Now the mars warming claim is tenuous but have an open mind to the very real and legitimate opposition.

it incredibly is an extremely exciting question. Many Martian climatologists (Earthbound ones, of direction) experience that Mars is in an ice age at latest, yet this could be ending quickly. The reasons for the tip are actually not completely understood, yet Mars probable is going with the aid of climate fluctuations in simple terms as Earth does. and then there is often the sunlight, which suits with the aid of its very own cycles and is likewise turning out to be slowly warmer with time. What impact ought to it have on us? it incredibly is a great question. If the polar ice caps of Mars have been to soften sufficient, it incredibly is understood that a Martian ecosystem of between a million/3 of an ecosystem to 2 atmospheres ought to probable out-gasoline from the permafrost on the poles. human beings ought to pass there and walk around in basic clothing out interior the open, wearing in common terms oxygen mask. Dwellings or maybe procuring department shops must be incredibly built in inflatable domes for little or no fee. a very new branch of human civilization might probable arrise there. At that element we would then be a 2 planet species. i won't be able to wait. Please study the impressive e book, "The Case for Mars" by utilising Dr. Robert Zubrin, PhD for an indepth layman's dialogue of this very subject rely.

How do you "know" man is the main cause of global warming? The science indicates otherwise, that man is accounting for only a very small percentage of greenhouse gases.

I'll agree that bring Mars or any other planet into the equation is somewhat spurious, but then so is your statement attributing global warming to man. Also spurious is basing future trends and action on the computer models used to predict climate change. Scientists can't even model a hurricane accurately, yet supposedly they have these amazing
computer models that forecast global devastation.

Let me clue you in on something, any "predictions" you see are no more than wild-*** guesses that fit the agenda of whoever is writing the articles you read. Data models can't even approach the complexity of a global climate system, so predicting anything from them is no better than using a crystal ball.

Do yourself a favor and compare your statement made to a statement of a follower of any religion.

Science should not be turned into a faith.

And observing the "climate" trends of other planets is a worthwhile study in itself, regardless of whether or not it has a link to our own planet.

EDIT.
I am just going to say, that I don't believe that you really believe your statements. The way it was written suggests you just wanted to show that a person should never put too much faith in science.

Tell them to stop being skepitical and conform already. They should know that man is causing both planets to warm. If we would just quit breathing this would all stop and the earth would be in harmony with the rest of the solar system. How dare they sight evidence that man might not be causing global warming.

You can pretend to know all you want. You boviously don't have a clue what you don't know. You want to belong to club, a social group, a religion and the truth probably means very little to you. I am not a non-believer. I am a skeptic. At least I have a little more understanding what is known and what is theory.
