Bri 89 is right, you've got to eat sensibly and do general exercise. A hula hoop might be a good way to get in shape - if you can't find an adult sized one you can make it from 20mm or 25mm irrigation tubing (take a look at hooping.org).

sit ups do not burn fat - they only build muscle and would make your belly look bigger.
the only fat burning exercise is cardio - it burns fat all over your body (you cant spot reduce body fat, thats something only lipo can do) - do it 4-6 times a week for 30-50min and combine with light weight training because cardio burns both - fat and muscle (more muscle=faster metabolism)

you cant really target just your belly fat ....you have to do cardio and lose the fat everywhere.. weight training will tone it though

any sort of activity or movement that engages you mid section (surfing, dancing, bellydancing, rowing, swimming, running, ball exercises(those are the best for me)) is going to help you lose weight on your waist.
