What sparks this baffling behavior anyways? Is it boredom? Instinct? Terroritorial behavior? Psychological imbalance? Environment?

What?

If you are talking about when the cat suddenly dashes around, etc., mine seems to get it late at night. She is excited sometimes and seems to be inviting us to play with her. Some times I will get one of her toys and throw it or a ball of paper. She also has a string she likes to play with. And if that does not work, that is when I get out the catnip "rat" and give it to her. Seems to calm her down after she throws it around, etc. and then curls up, licks and takes a nap.

I think it is cool as well. Sometimes we can turn the TV off and just sit and watch our cats. They are so funny to watch. When are cats get into that crazy mood-we say "they have lost it" as in they have lost their mind. I still don't know what triggers this. It mostly happens after a good nap also when we give them cat nip. We actually trained our cats to play during the day and sleep at night. Like the other person, enjoy and have a laugh. As I speak right now, one of my cats is running from the living room carpet to the kitchen floor just to slide on the floor, he repeats it about 20 times, hehe. Goofy I know.

Shelby, my cat, is three years old now and has become much more mature than she was previously; she was a terror as a kitten. I think that she sleeps most of the time when I am not home, so she does like to play when I am here. Occasionally, she still races around as if she is losing her mind! And, she's been known to attack me, particularly when I'm "computing"; she jumps onto the desk and begins biting me -- not as if she's angry but simply to distract me from what I'm doing, I imagine. Cats are unique among animals, I am convinced, so their behavior is incomprehensible; they act as the spirit moves them...

well, we used to call it the "rips" when our 6 cats started going nuts around 2300 or so..... remember that cats are nocturnal, and if yours are indoor cats, as ours were, there comes a time when they would be prowling, mating, checking out their environment, etc, and their environment is claustrophobic! take video and enjoy it, we always got a giggle out of their antics.

I think like humans that cats get bored when your not holding them or giving them attention. So all of the sudden they start running around and wasting their energy and time or maybe they know that it gets our intention and that's what they want...hmmm i really never understood it myself

Look at it this way: if you spent 16-20 hours of your day asleep whenever you would wake up you would probably have "goofy hour" too.
