When we have to reply to anyone who has insulted us, we should be careful to do it always with gentleness. A soft answer extinguishes the fire of wrath.

Alphonsus was inspired by a pure revelation from God because God said-

"And Good and evil are not equal. Respond to a bad deed with a good deed and your enemy might become your loving friend." (Qur'an 41:34)

Thanks for the quote. May God Bless you with more of the brilliant light of His gracious guidance.

This Saint, if that was what he really was, and God decides who His saints are and not some church like the Catholic church!!!,must have borrowed this saying of his from the Bible verse where it states that:
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).

A gentle response defuses anger, but a sharp tongue kindles a temper-fire. It is Biblical. Proverbs 15:1. This translation is called "The Message."

Yeah, that sounds nice, but often a gentle answer to an antagonistic question will stoke those fires of wrath.

I don't talk as well, but I said something similar to my son. About always being in control, keep a clear head when talking to people.

Similar in sports is that the second guy always get the foul (while the guy that started playing dirty rarely is caught) - so play coolly in all situations and stay focused.

Or, as Solomon said in the Book of Proverbs, "A soft answer turns away wrath."

That's pretty good advice. I've had the pleasant experience of turning would-be enemies into friends by responding rationally and calmly when they attacked me. I don't always have the presence of mind to be gentle in the face of criticism, but it's an excellent Christian goal to strive for.

Very true..when faced with a gentle reply, an angry person becomes angrier, but is forced to bottle it up and eventually let the anger die.

"A gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger" Proverbs 15:1

Colossians 4:6
Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
