Sometimes I talk to people and there are long pauses when I talk. I sound retarded when I talk to people. Or when the words come out,for example, instead of saying "there", I say "they". I don't know why I'm misusing words and stuttering. Confidence maybe? Or when I am leaving a message for someone, I forget what I want to say and there is a long pause...Instead I say umm. Please help me sound intelligent. This happens when I am talking to people who make me nervous. I am usually very articulate and my words flow.

Try and make an appointment with your doctor who will help you get to see a speech therapist. I was born with learning difficulties and the spear therapist helped me alot . Its like the learning difficulty is gone.

I have not got a problem talking.
I have a strong accent and to anyone not used to it it is fast and with a slight drawl.

But forgetting that what I have found I do, all the time, is think what I am going to say before I actually say it.

If I am planning to make a phone call I mentally rehearse it several times before actually making the call. I also try to predict a variation of replies and I so create answers to these replies.

It is a natural thing that I do, it has caused me some minor problems when carrying on a fluent conversation as my mind is listening to the speaker, rehearsing my lines and it may be I have to throw in a quick response.
Sounds mad but I suppose it is no different to an Englishman speaking French and translating replies in French back to English in his head.

The point I am trying to make is prepare before you speak, run it through your mind, if it sounds good say it straight out without a further thought.
Try it, if it does not work you have lost nothing.

Work on it in the mirror
Look yourself in the eye and talk, or sit down with a new friend and have a conversation with them to get more used to talking.

If it's a nervous stutter, take a public speaking course.
Well, you haven't taken one for high school already.

Check out the web site for the Stuttering Foundation at www.stutteringhelp.org as they are the organization where our family of stutterers found help. Their book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" was the best. One uncle found his speech therapist who specialized in treating stuttering through them.

Find a speech therapist who specializes in stuttering (not all of them are good in this area). This person will identify what is wrong with you and help you correct it. They are very good at helping in this area.

Good Luck
