I'm painting over paneling in a bedroom.....I'm doing 3 different shades of blue on the walls...Do I choose

a lighter shade of blue for the trim or a darker shade of blue for the trim? It's for a child's room.

IF THE ROOM ISNT TO DARK YOU SHOULD GO DARKER WITH THE TRIM AND THE WALLS SHOULD BE LIGHTER

Darker walls and lighter baseboards, window trims, door and frames etc. really make the walls pop and look fresh. For example colonial blue walls with white trim is very striking especially if the trims are wider. Artwork looks stunning when mounted on a darker wall also. When trims are darker, you run the risk of them looking like racing stripes around the room.
Also, when it comes to using 3 different shades of blue, make sure there is enough "distance" or contrast between the shades you have chosen. If they are too close you may not even notice the difference as light in any given room will be hitting the 4 walls at different angles and intensity depending on the direction of the light, and the window placement. It would be a waste if they turned out looking the same.

Paint horizontally. Paint the darker color at the bottom of the room, then medium, then lighter. Carry the lighter blue on up into the ceiling, add clouds or stars.

Maybe paint in wave style instead of hard horizontal lines. "paint away" your doors and trim by keeping them the same colors at the same levels of your paint.

i like the stripe idea b/c then it would distract from the paneling lines but if u'r not into doing stripes either horiz. OR vertical... then do ea wall a diff. shade of blue. & u don't have to decide on the trim b/c it would b that wall color. U can do opposite walls 1 color then other 2 the other blue colors u'r talking about.

Or do stripes horiz. dark on the bttm. then go up med to lt OR dk on bttm/ med on top & paint smaller stripes around the rm 1/2 way up or 1/2 way up or 3/4 way up to distract from te paneling lines.

It would make the rm more interesting w/ stripes or different colors of blue that one color then trim anthr. HAVE FUN!

do the walls with the lightest shade..otherwise the room will look really small...use the darker shades for the trim or the ceiling

I prefer light walls and dark trim myself. I have paneled walls I painted in stripes (you can kinda see in my picture) and they look great too! (I measured and taped for lines, I didn't follow the paneling lines.) Good luck! :)
*Sounds like you should do a cloud ceiling too, since it's blue! :)
