A christian is a religious follower of Christ's teachings. That's basically about it. There are many different branches and denominations of Christianity, just like with other religions, but the basic core beliefs are the same. The only difference is the dogma and methodologies. The only real difference between Catholics and Protestants is that Protestants recognize Goda as the head of the church instead of the Pope.

The first organized Church that followed the teachings of Christ were the Catholics. I don't know where and when they decided to elect the Popes, but some of the Popes were not exactly choir boys.
Martin Luther staged a "protest" against the church and its beliefs and this is when the Protestants came into being. The Lutheran Church is named after him. He resisted going through a Priest to confess sins and other rituals of the Catholic church, and insisted upon a literal interpretation of the Bible.
He also hated Jews, which made him a very controversial person. Many of his ideas about Jews were used by the Nazis of the Third Reich.

I have no doubt that there are "Catholic" Christians, and there are "Protestant" Christians. But it is seems that the answer is really found in the scriptures, and not what one or the other thinks.
First Corinthians 11:1 says: "Be ye followers of me (referring to Paul), even as I (referring to Paul) also am of Christ."
The Greek word translated as "followers" actually means "IMITATERS".

how can a catholic be a christian when they pray to saints and the virgin Mary? they've broken one the greatest commandments. lol then they have "fathers" who are suppose to resemble who?? hum do they resemble GOD on earth? I am a Christian because i follow Christs example not those of his disciples who in the end are just men with no great power or devine gift. they were good men but still men. and some of them turned their backs on Jesus when He needed them most but then again that was their purpose. catholics to me are the most manipulating and persuading religions out there besides the Islamic Muslim religion-i do not speak out of ignorance for i was a catholic while growing up and through my yrs in that religion i felt i was doing something wrong. i felt that religion was and is a farce. and as for the Islamic Muslim religion i do not practice it i do not believe in it as they do but i do read on it i do study it so at least i know something about it when i comment on it. I'm not here to insult or offend I'm just putting my 2cents as i have the right to do so.

In the beginning believers didn't have a name for themself. They were just followers of Christ.
Yet, soon people started to give themselves names and quarelled about who was better.
1Co 1:11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, "I follow Paul," or "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Cephas," or "I follow Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
After the reformation, many denominations where created due to different points of view.
Now however, many people are tired of the division between the churches, so they no longer say from which denomination they are, but call themselves christian.
I hope that the division will ceise and that the true christians will be known by their actions.
May God's name be glorified through all the earth.

Evangelicals or protestants label themselves as Christians to the exclusion of others adding different evangelicals or protestants, so you're no longer the one one being excluded. This isn't new and is exactly a anthropological tribal habits - "My god is greater than your god" and "we have now the only TRUE faith". The Catholic church has practiced this identical exclusionary habits for years as any Eastern Orthodox will inform you, who of path declare that they got here earlier than the Catholic church cut up off from them. Christ was once a Jew and his fans had been "christian". Martin Luther was once a Catholic and his fans had been Lutheran and there have been many different "protestants" at the moment, he was once one of the articulate. He was once assisted generally via the truth that he dedicated a "sin" via translating within the bible into the language of the individuals (German) and the to be had Gutenberg press mass produced it. The individuals would now refute any misinterpretations the clergymen got here up with - in brief made them dependable. It additionally gave upward thrust to more than one interpretaions of bible and we're nonetheless developing extra interpreatations. This gave upward thrust to denominations as disputes arose. There are over 38,000 denominations of christianity on the earth. The quantity of denominations is developing exponentially, There had been handiest 860 within the 1800s. They comfortably simply do not get along side different christians. The such a lot dominant ones had been essentially the most violent ones years in the past. I could no longer hassle looking to don't forget however a couple of so that you get the suggestion if that's valuable to you. That is the fast variant of denominations. Your peers are your peers without reference to their ideals. Beware of anyone that places their faith forward of affection for individuals. Only you'll pass judgement on your ideals or loss of them. Accepting individuals for who they're and being concerned compassionately for them is the one precise faith, any one can do this without or with a faith.

Of course Catholics are Christians - they believe in Jesus Christ as God. The name "Protestant" describes the actions taken by other religions that broke away from the original Christianity - Catholicism.

Everyone in a hundred different denominations including protestant, catholics, anglicans, etc. are all Christians. Christian means you believe in God and Jesus as Christ, your Savior! Thats all. All these schools of thought come from a million different interpretations about the bible and what the most important things were.
Thats why I am Christian! not protestant, not catholic, just Christian!

Many feel catholics lost their way with such things as the selling of indulgences and the near deification of Mary, etc. Others recall that Protestants were not treated on the best of terms by the Catholic church during the reformation.

I think the "label" "Christian" is used too broadly. To be a Christian is to be Christ-like. If you ask me, there are a lot of people out there that call themselves Christians that sure are not Christ-like. I know that is not nice to say, but it sure is the truth. It is sad. I don't care what religion one is. You have to act Christian to be a Christian.
