This sounds a little bit gross but...

I have a cocker spaniel and a kitten (the kitten is just about a year old and the puppy is 8.5 months old).

The Cat is in heat right now, and when I went to take the puppy out to use the potty earlier, I noticed that she's got a little bit of blood coming out from that area, like she might be on her period.

I took her to the vet for her checkup last week and they said that everything was great with her, so as of last Wed. she didn't have any problems, do you think this may just be her 'period' or is that not common???

Yes it is normal. Just like us women - if there are more than one in co habitation or work with other over a period of time that most women will usually be in their cycle at or near the same time.
Some small breed dogs do go into heat a lot sooner than that of a larger breed dog. Your vet may have some answers about your breed. We used "Hot Pants" for our female. they look like a diaper for dogs and have a place for their tales. If you notice her it again - I would put one on to see how long she will bleed and to keep a calendar on her times you see it. This will help you to talk to your vet to make sure things are normal and at what times of day or intervals in months she has this. Like one of the answerers said - unless you are using her for breeding (which is best to let them pup once) I would go ahead and have her fixed. Check with your vet in your area if there will be a low cost spay and neuter clinic if cost is a factor and make sure they put in more than 2 sutures when they are done.
If by chance she does leave some of it on carpet or furniture just clean it with a tablespoon of lysol cleaner and 1/4 cup of vinegar with a pint of water in a spray bottle and spray area. Leave it on for about 20 minutes then clean it up with a damp cloth rubbing in a circular motion and rinse with another wet towel and then blot with a dry towel. No stain and no smell. Let me know what you find out from your vet and hope she is healthy and happy as long as you are together.

Yes the rule of thumb is that dogs start their heat( period) at 6 mnths. Just like people some satart earlier and some later.
You should also notice she is swollen as well.
I would try to mak an apointment in about 4 weeks for a spay.
The heat usually last 3 weeks and i always figure an extra week just for safty sake.
Keep a close eye on her so she doesn't get pregnant. If for some reason you are planning on breeding you shouldn't breed at teh first heat.
You may also consider getting your kitten fixed as well.
Good Luck

Technically, dogs don't have periods, It's called going into heat or going into season. Dogs usually go into heat at approximately 6 moths of age, but can go into heat as late as one yer.

The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.

The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.

Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.

Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.

While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. It I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer

Because he's a blended breed he might have characteristics from both breed. Its difficult to inform in view that he's still a puppy. As he grows you're going to see his personality and he may resemble one breed greater than the other. Read up on them each so your all set and of path have fun with your pup.

She is in heat as well.

If you don't know about heat cycles of dogs you really should get your dog spayed. You are going to end up with puppies if you aren't careful with her as she will attract male dogs while she is in heat.

considering the fact that he's a blended breed he might have features from the two breed. Its no longer difficulty-free to tell because of the fact he continues to be a pup. As he grows you will see his character and he might resemble one breed better than the different. study up on them the two so your arranged and of course have exciting with your pup.

Dogs don't have periods - she's in heat and should really be spayed for her health if nothing else. Then you don't have to worry about accidental matings, either.

sounds like shes in heat, u might wanna "fix" her unless u wanna breed her. when my dog wasnt spayed and she was in heat, there were stray dogs howling outside my fence everyday lol. theyd always try to get to her, its also better for their health if u spay them.

If the veterinarian cannot answer your question, you need to find a new one...bottom line. You should have left there with no doubt in your mind.
