Just rebuild the tearing down has already happened I take it so just do the work and keep rebuilding what was lost and then one day you will look up and realize you have alot better reputation. It is not easy and if you feel you will never be able to rebuild from hard work than I would say move and never make the same mistake twice

generally agree with all the answers here.
tough one though, own up to ones mistakes, ask the company if there is a mechanism that the company allows retribution. Have it all in black and white, received and -countersigned
after that resolve not to commit the same mistake, after retribution, give it some time he might get demoted, how one reacts to a demotion will send signals to an employer, but in the long run, they'll have more respect for him so when he decides to resign courteously and move on to other employment he has it all on paper. (easier said than done tho, good luck to that someone)

Don't make the same mistakes again. You have not failed if you've learned from your mistakes.....make that known to those you associate with. I've made many, many mistakes in my life but I've learned from them. I've made it known to all I associate with that I'll NEVER do the things I've done before, at least, not on purpose. If they can't accept what you say as truth, then that's their problem, isn't it?
Another thing....dont try to hide the truth. Admit to making mistakes....you're only human.

First, own up to it. Admit freely your mistakes and say to anyone who asks you're working to correct the behavior. Also, sit down with your boss and ask for advice on how you could improve your performance. Show a concentrated effort to improve. Never deny you screw-ups - we all make them. Just don't let them define who you are.

It depends on the severoty of what you did. Just start proving yourself by working hard at your job and other aspects of your life that you may have been lacking in.

Reputation is what OTHER PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE.
Character is who you REALLY ARE AND YOUR TRUE SELF ONLY KNOWN UNTO YOU.
