God's grace allows us to have Faith which involves doing works, believing, etc. Therefore we must LIVE out our Faith.
"Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself" James 2:17
Jesus will judge us by what we did, feed the hungry, clothe the poor, etc.

Eph 2:8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:" This clearly states the two components of salvation are grace through faith. We have the faith that by the grace of God we will be saved. Now faith without works might be dead but arn't we showing "works" by accepting the Grace of God into our lives?
Now as as religion goes, what some may call works, the Bible says Jas 1:27 "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."
have a misconception of both religion and works or confuse the two. Our faith and religion will show through these works.

The reality is we are saved by works.
Jesus Christ's finished work on the Cross. (solely) This includes the grace imparted for men to become believers.

We are saved by placing our faith (believing) in Christ, by the grace of God.
Salvation has always been through faith, starting with Abraham on. Abraham believed God and was reckoned righteous.
Works cannot save a person. However, faith without works is dead, faith without works is useless. Even the demons believe and shudder.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God." Ephesians 2:8
Hebrews Chapter 11 is a good one to read regarding faith.

Well, the major theological point that kicked off the reformation was Luther's contention that it was faith alone that justified our salvation. Considering that the religious world has argued this point for 500 years, I kinda doubt that Yahoo! will settle the debate.
But to simplify, for catholics it is both, for most protestants it is faith alone. However, as Luther pointed out, good trees produce good fruit, so that people that are saved often have works flowing from them automatically. However, they are not required, and works without faith don't get you anywhere in most protestant sects to my knowledge.

I'd say most Christians would say that grace alone saves you but good works show that you are saved.

(Matthew 19:1617) - "And behold, one came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?" 17And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
Jesus was speaking to a Lawyer who was self-righteous since he wanted to put Jesus to the test (Luke 10:25). He asked what he must do in order to obtain eternal life and Jesus responded with the requirements of keeping the commandments.
If a person keeps all of the commandments, it would seem that they could obtain eternal life. However, nobody can keep all of the commandments. Therefore, Jesus' comments to this man show this man that justification can only be by faith since no one can keep all of the commandments. This is why it says in Eph. 2:8 that we are saved by grace through faith.
Romans 3:20,28 and Galatians 2:16 tells us that no one is justified in the sight of God by the law; that is, by the works that he can do.
True faith results in true works.

For by grace ye are saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift from God--- it is not of works lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8
When we have accepted Christ and been saved, those works come naturally to us, as we strive to be Christ-like and please the Lord. But, the bible clearly says we are not saved by works alone.

Grace alone- God's wonderful grace. And with that comes a want to do works in His name, because of our faith- for faith without works is dead as the Bible says- but that does not save us-- that comes WITH salvation.

OK, here's the scene. Jesus is being executed on the cross between two theives.
The first thief says gives Jesus a lot of crap that He is just a nut job.
The second theif tells him to knock it off. That the two of them were guilty, Jesus is innocent, and he should shut his pie hole.
Jesus says to the second thief, "You shall be with me this day in Paradise." We have no reason to believe that thief ever did anything good in his life, but he believed in Jesus. That was enough.
Ain't nuthin' you're ever gonna do to get you in heaven. We are saved by the grace of God.

By God's grace alone. Works are very important, but they are our own doing, and we know that there is nothing we can do to save ourselves. If we could save ourselves, Jesus wouldn't have needed to leave His throne to save us.
Blessings to you!
