Yeah they think it's funny. I never say it in anger. We have my dog shaved and they think it's funny. So when they start fighting i tell them...nope, nope, nope...stop fighting or i will shave you like paris (dogs name) They laugh and say nooooooooooooooo. We promise to be good. Or if one of them says a bad word like shut-up to the other, i'll step in and say...if you don't stop i'll sell you to the gypsies. It's all in fun. I only ask this because i said it in a store the other day and i got a strange look from another mother. Like a "how dare you look". The girls know we are kidding though.

If it isn't a threat and you are just joking then it seems harmless.
If you were serious, then it is threatening or bribing which is the wrong way to teach a child. If you add humiliation and are half joking, it sends mixed signals and isn't fair to kids.
Why not just say no and mean it.

No! Isay it to my kids and they tell their friends they'll trade me and dad for more video games......we all are just playing. Besides, my kids like gypsies! It's not scary/threatening at all!
And as for the shaving of the heads.....It's a rule in my house that if they ever take a scissors to their own hair that I will shave 'em bald. My kids r 14, 9, 8, and 4. Never had anyone misbehave w/scissors yet! My sister on the other hand is constantly having to take her kids in to the stylist because they try to do their own hair. Go figure!

I believe in saying things and following through with them but i kid around with my son all the time. When he's mad he's recently started up this "i don't like you" talk and i say "then go find you a new mommy" he usually cries and says "no i want you" and then we hug and it's all over.
I've told him i'm going to take him to the store and trade him in for a good boy, and he used to throw a fit and straighten up real quick but now he knows it's a joke.
But the most recent is, my best friend is a hair dresser she cuts his hair and he was acting up one day and she told him that if he wasn't good she was going to shave him bald and of course he said "no you won't" and this and that. Well about a week later he hit 2 kids outside and was back mouthing me so bad we took him in her place and shaved his head!! He's been perfect ever since!!
There's a time for play and a time to say things and be serious about it. You know what works for your child, don't pay attention to others.

I've never heard the shave them part but my parents were always saying they would sell us off to the gypsies. Unfortunately we didn't find it too amusing considering most of our kin were gypsies.

I've told both of my kids I would sell them to the gypsies a gazillion times. They look at me like I'm nuts.

I kid around with my kids and say I will put them in the front lawn with a for sale sign or offer them to family members. But it is never when I am upset in good fun if they are acting goofy. So it depends on when and why you are saying it. If the kids think you are serious you shouldn't say it.

no its not abuse until you actually do it.
My best friend used to tell her young one jokingly that if she didn't stop this or that she'd beat her. Of course her daughter knew she'd never beat her and it was used in a joking way, when what she was doing wasn't serious. So at school she told her teacher, "Oh no, if I don't do it my momma is gonna beat me?!?" My friend said she about fell out on the floor with embarassment.

Sell them to the Gypsies sounds less scary, because not really doable. I'd go with that one.

My dad used to be a joker when I was younger. Every morning when he dropped me off at school we would pass this tool store called, "The Nut Place" and every morning we passed it my dad would tell me, "Oh, here's your school" or "Ok, I'm going to drop you off here today" or something silly like that. That's just your relationship with your kids and it's special b/c it's between you and them.
