I understand you are an idiot so I'll use little words. 1st, the highways are NOT a NASCAR track, you may want to risk your own life but who do you risk everyone elses life who go the speed limit, DON'T HONK or flash your lights because others obey the LAW. Listen carefully...when you are merging on to the highway it's NOT the people driving on the highway to get out of your way..YOU have to wait and get into traffic...it's not a race. Don't blame others who obey the legal speed limits. Today I buried a friend because of a rude truck driver who plowed into the rear of his car, 4 eye witnesses seen the trucker TAILGATING him for 5 miles because my friend DARED to drive 65 in a 65, the trucker was charged...I can't wait to be there at the trial...of course with his family, wife and 3 small children who NO LONGER HAVE THEIR FATHER
because of a JERK.

One of the biggest problems today on the roads is a lack of law enforcement. Do you know why these guys do this stuff when it is against the law? They know that they will maybe get a ticket 1 out of a 100 times. Even then, they can sometimes fight it and get it tossed out. Even then, the punishment is only a slap on the wrist. There needs to be some major overhaul of the laws on the road and the punishments for breaking them and make sure that the laws are being enforced.

A few things:

(1) Actually, the traffic merging onto the highway has the right of way under Federal law. In my mind, however, that doesn't excuse people who don't bother to look at the traffic on the freeway and find a hole in traffic that they can get into easily. I don't understand why people get to the end of the merge lane and THEN start looking to move over.

(2) Don't know what it's like in your area, but here in Detroit we have a big problem with people who insist on doing 55 in the left lane (in areas where the speed limit is 65 or 70) and will not move over to the right for anyone; not even a police officer on a call. That's every bit as unacceptable as someone trying to set the land speed record from their place of employment to their front door.

(3) Bad driving goes both ways. If you're in the left lane on the freeway doing the speed limit and someone is approaching you quickly from the rear, what's the big deal about getting out of the way if you can? Yes, the guy coming up on your tail at a high rate of speed (assuming he/she is not a police officer or driving an emergency vehicle) is doing something illegal, rude, and dangerous, but purposely blocking a driver like that is at the very least rude and dangerous too -- in some states it's also illegal, even if the other driver is speeding (obstructing traffic). And remember that road ragers will think YOU are the @$$hole and might pull out a gun and start shooting. Is that worth it? Let 'em go and wish them a happy ticket when the police nail them. People who drive like that always end up getting nailed.

P.S.: Sorry to hear about your friend, and hope the idiot truck driver gets what he deserves. Just be careful -- don't want some nimrod trying to run YOU off the road under the same circumstances.

Chances are your buddy was hanging out in the left lane, yapping on his cell phone, an blocking off the truck from passing him, If your friend was being tailgated for five miles, wouldn't pulling to the side of the road be the intelligent thing to do? I'm not saying the truck isn't to blame, but your buddy could have avoided the accident. And yes, it is the car mergings resonsibility to find his way in, but it is common courtesy to not make it hard for him. There are better ways of crying about your fear of driving than posting about it here. There are groups for this kind of thing. And don't forget about the bus. You seem like you'd be more comfortable there.

I have no objection to people going the speed limit, but what really bothers me are the ones who do it in the left lane. In my state there are signs that read, "Slow Traffic Keep Right." If the speed limit is 70 and you're doing 70, but all the other traffic is doing 75, then get the heck out of the left lane and let me go. Call me a bad driver if you like, but move over while you're doing it!

Wow that really sucks. My condolences I will be a better driver because I read this. I normally go 80 mph since this is California and almost everyone goes 80-100 on the freeway. I will be a better driver in the future. I never tailgate though. I'm sorry for your loss.

I hope you feel a little better. You can not change what has happened to your friend. Just be there for her and her children and at his trail. He will probably end up in jail. I realize people that are going fast are dangerous but the jerks that hang out in the fast lane and go slow cause more accidents than anyone else. Now I feel better.

i hope the driver gets the max. ive seen too many tailgater accidents...

i cite the crap out of tailgaters. people are stupid, i have ticketed two drivers this year for tailgating me! they fly up on me when i am in my cruiser and going 4-5 over, one actually honked at me hahahhaha, so i pull into a driveway, get behind them and BOOM. ticket for failure to maintain a safe distance. i never realized how stupid people are, until i became a cop.
but then again when you are going slow in the fast lane, if you can you need to move over, and not block the fast ones.

I am sincerely sorry for your hardships... I do believe more drivers should be considerate of others wishing to obey the laws, if we are going to slow pass us.. WE DONT MIND, I get accused constantly of being a "granny" driver, and I refuse to apologize for my precautions to my safety and those that travel with me. God bless your friend and the family and friends. Prayers and thoughts for them always.

You mister cause more wrecks that that guy! People driving on the highway are supposed to yield to cars entering the highway. The left lane is for PASSING not driving in.
