can be taken by itself, out of context, and be used for an arguement? You have to use the entire Bible to learn the answers. Isolated and seperate verses lose meaning unless incorporated into the whole text. That is why it is important to read and study the Bible every day.

WOW! Good responses everyone. A lot of different views. Thanks to all. And use study guides to help you get the original translations. Everything in it is true and correct. Only Man is in error.

AMEN! One must know who that verse is speaking about and who it is speaking to- One must know the beginning of that book, to know what that entire book is speaking about.
Not just randomly take a verse and create their own relegion off of it- which many do!

For example- the universalist church thinks "He wills that none should perish" and "Every knee will bow and tongue confess that Jesus is Lord" means that everyone will go to heaven.
And this astonishes me that they would think this- The ENTIRE Bible is clear on was is required for salvation in Jesus Christ- These scriptures refer to those whom God has called ( He wills none should perish ) and that every knee will bow to Him come judgment day ( They will have no choice! But it will be too late for those who rejected Him on earth)

So yes, I agree with what you are saying- as in Acts it tells us to search the scriptures daily-- THIS IS WHY! Study God's word and seek HIS wisdom- do not lean on your own understanding ( Proverbs 3:5-6)

Well I believe it starts when a man or group of men, get together and try to research the bible on their own and not really knowing the truth themselves they misjudge, and take everything wrong, and that is how you have some of the religions today, I myself use to be in a crazy religion, that would focus on a few particular verses, and basically ignore the rest, they indoctrinated us so, that when I started going to other churches I thought they were all lost and going to hell, I thought we were the elect few that knew the truth and it was my duty to show these sinners the way. Little did I know I was in for a rude awakening when I started listening to the preaching and the bible studies and reading the bible, and being away from those false teachers, I started realizing I was in error not them, although I believe that I was saved, just not knowing the full truth of God. But some religions focus on just a select few versus to control or dominate their wives or children into what they want them to be, they twist the bible around and make it suit themselves either consciously or subconsciously and they use the versus to put a strict thumb on their congregation, when clearly the bible didn't intended for one verse to make a doctrine, and the versus in the old testament, while good, yet were under the law and since Jesus came and died on the cross, we are no longer under the law, but under grace, and God didn't intend for us to live the way I use to live, all bound in my dress and looks, and my "holiness" when there was nothing holly about it. The fact is God is a God of grace and compassion, the bible says God is not the author of fear, yet while in this false doctrine, I experienced a lot of fear, but after leaving, I realized, that yes there are wolves in sheep's clothing, and there out to get your soul, guard you heart, soul, mind, and strength, for there are devils walking around trying to take it all away from us!

Well reading the Bible everyday doesn't mean they will get the proper context. Without someone with authority (i.e. a Priest, Pastor or Bishop) to explain to put it in its true cultural, historical, and theological context one can be just as turned around about the message in the entire Bible as one is on one particular verse in it.

Different people can read the Bible and each will get a different meaning of things. When we need answers to our questions, some will search the Bible for an answer and they will find one. That is what is so amazing about the Bible.

because it can. i'm am a christian, but i know that there are parts of tha bible that contradict itself. and the bible was written so long ago and translated so many times, you have to believe that some things were lost. because of this i use certain verses rather than the bible in general. when you mention the whole that just gives them more things to pick at in an argument

well said! :) But sword also has a point, some scripture is already self explanatory by itself. (ummmm no pun intended, lol)

However, satan knows the Bible as well as we do, and, purposely tries to turn things to his advantage.....even with Jesus he tried to twist the scripture from O.T. to try and trip Jesus up!

The only way we may counter-attack or be armed against such attacks is to keep on reading and studying, just as you said....

God Bless :)

* scholar, you are partly right, for those unable to do so at first, until they have the Holy Spirit to teach, advise, direct, correct, etc.,. that is why there ARE such Church leaders, to help.....however, not everyone has that accessability, and, isn't an excuse....Jesus wants us each to ask directly and promises to answer.

There are MANY false teachers out there whom are placed in positions as Pastors, Ministers, Reverands, and the like...and to tell the truth, it is only by personal study and asking for ourselves can we be sure of "truth" sometimes.

In the matters of asking God direct while we study, I speak from experience, for, that is how I learned.... for my family weren't church-going people, and had no "time" to teach me to read, let alone teach about the Bible which lay untouched in our home till I "borrowed" it and began my own walk when around 4 years old.

God didn't think me too young, nor too unimportant to answer any and all questions I put before Him....and whom am I? no-one important in the scope of man's idea...so....if He did it for one such as I and helped me to understand, then He can do it for all.

God be with you! :)

Ridiculous. Stop defending the indefensible. Some verses are crystal clear in what they say. Such as...

"Exodus 32:14
And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. "

Meaning this god felt remorse, yet a "perfect" being can't show remorse for something he's done, as it's nothing he wouldn't know would happen anyway.

How many other ways are there to interpret that??

I agree with Sword/Lord that some verses do stand alone. It's still important, however to know which ones and be ready in season and out of season to use God's word for and in any situation that is glorifying to Him and not for the sake of argument.

I agree, that is not at all a valid foundation for an argument and people use individual Bible lines as excuses for bad things far too much.

The answer may be that they are too ignorant to realize one line does not constitute a solid argument, or that the one line suits their purposes and thus they choose to ignore the rest because it may not.

The bible is not the word of God it was written by man if it was Gods book he would have wrote it himself. .If you know the history of Christianity you will know the bible has nothing to do with the message of Jesus it is a silly Roman religion that spread through murder and war.
