What I do is get a nice basket, lined with either boy/girl fabric eg gingham, and each time I shop I buy baby powder, talc, lotion, baby nail scissors, packs of nappies (diapers), gripe water, forehead themometer, baby wipes - stuff like that, that will be useful, even up to say baby's 1st birthday , they will get so many teddy bears and cute clothes - sometimes the little essentials come in very handy! When they empty the basket, it can be used for toys and things. It's always been the most popular gift, you can add to it slowly too, no need to go and spend a lot on one gift. They grow out of little clothes so fast that they will probably only wear all those presents once!

Don't forget scratch mittens !

I am a mother of 5 and always like the presents with a slightly more personal touch rather than practical items.A gift certificate for family portrait,a casting set for baby's hand and footprints, a star named after baby, a framed poem or name defenition or a photo album or baby scrapbook. A "gift voucher" for a nights free babysitting from you.
Hope this helps and good luck to your friends.

To be frank I'd say money, honestly the family would probably be a bit hard pushed so if you give them money it would come in handy. Plus everyone gives toys and babies that are so young can't even play with them, and clothes can only last about 3 months, and a special silver rattle or something is cute but not exactly practical.... Sorry.

Depends on how much you want to spend. For something really special http://www.little-impressions.com/
Theres vouchers for stores like babies-r-us & mothercare.
If you go into mothercare itself they do a lovely set made up in a basket to say congrats on your new baby boy, you should go in and have a look because there are a lot of baby boy gifts.
Baby toys, blankets, piggy bank.
When we had our lil girl last october we got lots of clothes which were great also vouchers and teddy bears.
Hope thats given you some ideas :o)

I'll tell you from experience...get them a case of diapers from Costco...Huggies size 1... They are gonna love you for that! They cost about $40 for the case... After people get you all of the clothes and accessories for the baby, you still need those diapers and boy do they go through them!

Usually the family registers somewhere...letting everyone know what is still needed for the baby. Diapers are always good...find out if they are using clothe or disposable. An outfit or two...gifts cards are awesome too. A distant relative of mine sent me a one year membership to Picture People. It was awesome...one of my favorite gifts!

I would go for a really nice bunch of flowers for the mother, a bottle of champagne for both of them and then a bottle of wine to lay down for the boy to get when he's 18. If they have family then they will get loads of baby stuff so buy something to pamper them and for the boy when he can appreciate it.

I'm expecting a boy in early September, and the one thing that i would love are baby books to read to my new son. Of course everyone has a registry for things that they would need for the baby, but that's what family and friends get at the baby showers. No one hardly gives baby books at showers, and that's one important thing to do is read to your baby.

Their are so many great things that you can buy. I found, when I had my twins, that gift cards were the best things.

A lot of people will buy clothes and baby items..

Gift cards for local pizza and Chinese food places are great when they are tired and don't feel like cooking.

Gas gift cards are great just to help them out with not having to worry about financial issues.

Wal-Mart gift cards are a big help for diapers, formula and normal household items.

Congratulations to your friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!
