You have begun your thought process with a false premise. Sin is not just "transgression of God’s law". The word "sin" is an old English word in archery that means "missed the mark". If you did not hit the bullseye, you were called a "sinner". Now there are many sins (little s and plural) but there is only one Sin (capitol S and singular). Sin is a positional state that separates you from God. When Christ died, He saved us from Sin. That is, the positional state of being "in Sin" has been eliminated.
Man is separated from God because of sin. Fellowship was broken and the wages of sin is death. Man could not buy his way to righteousness through good works, deeds or rituals. The payment was death. But God provided a loophole, that a substitution could be made. This is where the sacrificial lamb became necessary. Your sins were passed onto the lamb, and the lamb took your payment for sin.
This was a foreshadow for He who was to come. For as Abraham said, "God will provide Himself the Lamb." This was seen when John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and proclaimed "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world."
If we ask Jesus to be Lord and Savior, we are, in essence, passing our sins onto Him as our personal lamb. Our payment was paid in full on the cross. Which is why Jesus said "Tetelestai" or "paid in full" (commonly translated as "it is finished").
So, with sin paid in full, we now have access to the throne wherein we can cry Abba, Father to the Almighty God. It is through Christ that our sins have been removed and thrown into the deepest ocean and as far as the East is from the West.
1 Cor. 15:1-4
I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures

God had made Adam a perfect man in the image of God. Everything was made perfect in Eden before sin came along for lack of obedience. God gave one request and that was do not eat of the tree of good and evil. God had to send his son without sin or blemish to spread Gods word and do Gods will, (God in the flesh) and the blood was shed so sin would be forgiven and the New testament would be fullfilled and the old laws would be done away with...and by his blood there is power for us. So by his blood we are set free, for those who believe. Big part of you needs to read the new testament.

Without a sacrifice that seems of great magnitude, how else could religion use these stories to control other people to sacrifice all their own personal agendas in this life? The bible preaches complete obedience to one who loves us unconditionally, though like yourself, I fail to see how that "sacrifice" proved that love to us. While I respect everyone's right to religion and their own spirituality, and I believe in God in a way that some would consider Paganism or agnosticism (If I'm the best person I can be and respect and cherish life and others, but don't go to church and sing every Sunday or disturb other's in their personal freedoms, and God doesn't accept me into heaven, then I don't want to go there anyway, none of my loved ones will be there either...), I feel the bible should be viewed as what it was, colorful stories that men wrote to control the masses.

1) We were created good.
2) The wages of sin is death, therefore, when man sinned, he became spiritually dead, creating a chasm between God and man.
3) Something must pay the wages of sin (death) to bridge the gap.
4) God could let man pay, but that would leave man spiritually dead and the gap unbridged.
5) The only other out is to have God pay in the place of man, hence, the crucifixion. It is the only way to satisfy both God's love and God's justice.

Transgression is just one part of the sin equation; the other is sin nature itself. We chose against God in the garden, and forever separated ourselves from him by the choices of our flesh.
Sin had to be "covered" (someone says "Hey I got ya covered) by payment-and the payment had to be perfect.
The only One who knew perfection was Jesus.
Jesus willingly laid down his life, knowing what the end result would be.

It follows the sacrifice required to atone for one's sin while it also created a new covenant between God and man. Under the old covenant, the blood of a 'clean' animal was required to be spilled as part of atonement. Jesus represented the highest order of animal and was clean, because he was without sin. He was sacrificed in our place, just as animals under the old convenant were. His resurection defined God's power over death and granted us everlasting life with him in heaven if we only accept that Jesus is the true son of God and that he died for our sins, rising on the third day.
God could have done whatever he wanted...he chose to be consistent.

The Bible says "without the shedding of blood there is no remission (payment) for sins." The Israelites sacrificed perfect, spotless oxen, goats, doves, etc to pay for their sins, but God's perfect plan was to have that Perfect Sacrifice so that no other sacrifices would be needed. The only One capable of being perfectly sinless sacrifice was God's Son. Certainly, if there were any other way, God would have used it. Christ himself prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, "O Father, if it be possible, let this cup [speaking of His death] pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." Christ understood that the only way to save mankind from eternal punishment in hell was to allow Himself to be that Perfect Lamb, that Perfect Sacrifice, for "without the shedding of blood there is no remission for sins." When Christ died on the cross, He took our place. He took our sins and God punished Him instead of us. Someone had to pay for them....either we pay for them for all of eternity in hell, or we let what Christ did for us be sufficient.
The difference between Christianity and other religions is that our Savior did not stay dead. When God raised him from the dead on the third day after His crucifixion, He was proving victory over death, so that we would be able to live in heaven forever after we die. Mohammed is still dead. Buddha is dead. But Jesus Christ is alive.
Christianity is NOT about all the do's and don'ts of organized religion. It is about having a personal relationship with God. In this relationship, you maintain it as you would others: you talk with God, you read what He has written you (the Bible), you spend time alone with Him. The awesome thing is, all you have to do is ask. You only need to ask Him to forgive you, and He will, because He has already paid the price for your sins; you only need to accept His free gift. It's that simple. You don't have to go to a church to do this, you can ask Him right there at your computer. You can speak the words out loud, or in your mind, and if you truly want His forgiveness, He will give it to you. It's already been paid for, and it's free to you. He loves you so much that He gave the greatest gift He could, to make sure that you would not be punished for your sins. He went to the extreme to make sure that you would be able to go to heaven.
I recommend you find a Bible and read the Gospel of John, and the Book of Romans. Get a good picture of Who He is, and how much He loves you, and what great lengths He went to, what mercy He has shown, in providing a way for YOU to live forever with Him in heaven. He loves you so much, so much more than we will ever fully understand. God bless you as you seek Him.
"And they shall seek me, and find me, when they shall search for me with all their hearts."

The reason the whole story doesn't make sense is because it is a myth. Why would God have his own son die? Simple, he whole story is a myth. Why couldn't God think of something better to do than watch his own son suffer? Simple, the whole story is a myth.
