I basically want to know how people who use P2P get caught. Do they get caught because they are sharing, or do they get caught because they are downloading. In cases where college students are caught ( for example) what is that gets them caught

If you go into your P2P program, you can see the IP addresses of everyone you are getting the file from. So can the Music Police. They simply follow that IP address to you and arrest you.

It is impossible to download a file without also sharing it with other people while you are getting it. So anytime your P2P is running, you are both uploading and downloading.

Usually they will go after the people who have 100 or more songs/movies shared out first. But they have been known to take a day when they go after "everyone" they can trace down that day.

They get caught because ALL P2P software TRACKS the IP address of the downloader! When the RIAA shows up with a warrant at the P2P Company door they give them your IP address. With it they find you!

traffic analyses..
If you download a single dvd or so, they won't notice it...
if you like download 40GB in a day, they could notice it..
if you like have a monthly download of 1TB, they start asking questions..
