In theory Gold is a better conductor of electricity than silver or copper. Thus in theory it should produce a better picture and better audio quality.

Gold plugs are gold plated.

They will both work and you probably won't notice any difference looking at the picture or listening to sound from a TV. Now if you have a home theater or high quality components then there may be a difference in performance.

A silver or regular cord will work in a gold jack. If your silver cord does not work I would guess the cord is bad.
