i have recently been asking and answering ?'s but i dont get what the points thing is for..?

Its there to make some feel that they are better. To some it is probably the only thing they've accomplished. For the most part it means absolutely nothing than some have more free time than others.

Read the information under your point total by clicking on your username, and then on the ? symbol by your "Total Points". It is explained there.
